Not sure about other networks, but if you're on o2 send multimedia message (MMS) instead of a text - MMS 25p, normal txt 49p!!! You get more characters on a MMS so can therefore say more and even add a photo (all for 25p)... discovered this a few years ago and I'm sure I'll be doing the same when I go in 3 weeks time.
Call wise - buy a phone card and use public call box - much cheaper, or use email - a lot of restaurants have a computer you can use (Cupids for one!)
Laundrettes - I always use the one next to Jimmys (and I don't know what fabric conditioner they use but the smell is divine!) they will also take odd items (as do most around Icmeler), which is great if you're not wanting a load done, a price list is usually up somewhere - per skirt, per beach towel etc... certainly cuts down on packing!
