Why leave icmeler

Postby john » 13 Apr 2011 22:07

Just read Tommy from the dream three bells has sold up and is in the UK. First let me say thanks for some great nights you will be missed but good luck whatever you are doing now.
What i can't understand is why anyone would leave ( what i think ) is the best place in the world to come to cold wet windy UK. Wish the rolls where reversed i would love to live and work in Icmeler.

because turkish people have hard lives and work all the hours god sends for very little money
they all have a rosy image of the UK as a rich country that is much better
i cant see why they all want to come here either but they seem to

Tommy also has an English wife and a young child, so possibly they want to spend more time in the UK as he will be going to nursery school and school very soon.

We have known Tommy for years, and he will be sadly missed, but he has to do what is right for his family. :)

It is totally different living all year round and working their hours etc year after year in a country that you holiday in. It seems like paradise on holiday but is totally different to what you think it would be. You would soon be sick of the sun with no aircon in the heat of the summer and having to work all hours. I mean living there and not just having a holiday home to visit for a few months or the summer season. There are many advantages to living here in the UK, the NHS, free prescriptions for those in need, housing benefit, DLA, unemployment benefit......need I go on?.........
I can speak from experience as I lived in a place where I had holidayed at many times (not Turkey) and you realize how easy we have it here. Thats why the whole world seems to want to be here and even want British Citizenship. We are allowed in most Countries and are not refused entry like some nationals of other countries. Be proud and thankful to be British because we do not suffer like some Nations and are able to afford to travel and easily given visa's. Most of these people in the resorts work harder than any I have seen here so do not envy them, I have known a few Brits working there in the Icmeler bars and they didn't hack it for long!

yes I can only echo what Chocoholic has said. I lived in Icmeler for 18 months - we had our own business but it didnt work. Believe it or not many times when I saw the coaches coming to pick up people to take them back to the airport i really wished i was going with them. It's very very hard work during summer, long hours and alot of competing businesses, cold, wet and windy during winter with nothing to do. I can honestly say if i had a choice i would do it again, I loved the experience but i am much happier at home. One day tho I will go back.... for a visit only tho

To me this country is finished, but no way on earth would I like to work the hours they do in Icmeler, I simply couldn't do it. I spoke to Jay Jay from the Alvaro the other day and he isn't going to be there this season beacause it's only a six month job...he wants a bigger season, that is nothing to do with anything else other than money. You have to admire the guys.

You have hit the nail on the head there kelzbelz, I was so very homesick just as you were, you feel it especially if you are ill or things are not going so good. At least you tried though which is something most people mean to but maybe lack the courage and never do. It is a very big step but I think we gain from our experiences and appreciate this country more and also how hard the Turkish waiters etc work and that makes us far better and less demanding tourists.
BTW, welcome to the forum, hope to read more from you.

Thanks Chocoholic!
Yes your right Adewolves the hours are horrendous with little money at the end of it. A problem also can be that some bosses dont pay their staff so those boys have worked for 6 months with nothing at the end of it. For 6 months they work their behinds off and for the other 6 they dont have any money and live a very different lifestyle than we do here. I know when i was a tourist they thought we were the richest people on earth because we literally throw money around when on holiday - but what they didnt realise was we work all year to have our holiday. Something my dear husband has realised since coming to the UK....... lol

I absolutely agree how hard they work there katie but not materialistic like us? mmmm, I had my new iphone when they first came out, got it through my work and there were swarms around me wanting one whenever I was texting etc in any bar, have had many (unfulfilled!) requests for the newest phones, laptops etc in all the years I have been going. Also have you seen the Harley Davidson riders? Just like the British ones lol! Think human nature is basically the same the world over!

yeah the turkish people want all the new pieces of technology such as phones and laptops just like us but they cant afford them
as items like that are more expensive in turkey than in the UK and their wages are not even near what ours are
that is mainly due to the cost of living
turkish people working in the tourists resorts know that phones and other things are cheaper in the UK so many ask their english or scottish friends to take them one across and they will pay them back for it
but i do agree chocoholic it is human nature
turkish people are just seeing what we have and want a life like it too

You are spot on there Chocoholic. When I lived there it was most definitely the case that the boys were very materialistic indeed. Just like the rest of the world they wanted it all and they wanted it now! Money and posessions were commonly and openly discussed. And as the years have gone on I have noticed that their technical gadgets are as common and more high tech than the tourist's !!!!!!! Maybe I should ask them if they can get me some. lol:D
