Not sure if any of you could answer this or even if i should be asking, but, when we came back last year ( dalaman) we checked in and were over the allowence, and was told to go to another desk ( opposite the check-in) to pay the extra, then went through passport control. Once in the departure lounge, i couldn't help thinking 'Why the hell did i pay for the extra' as no body checked if we had or not......so this got me thinking Could i have got away with it? afterall it was quite a bit of money especailly when your on your way home.

No... sorry but why should you "Get away with it"

If you don't want to pay the fine, then don't do the crime.

Have never been charged for being over,however have seen on a couple of occasions at Dalaman,the man with the clip board and a cash box.lets say he was kept busy being called from check in desk to check in desk.

The likelyhood is that if you hadn't paid then your luggage may not have travelled with you, is it worth the risk?

when i have been charged at aberdeen and dalaman they have withheld my boarding card till its paid.

We had to pay for being over in 2009. So last year, following a recommendation on this forum I bought two holdalls in Argos. The two empty holdalls weighed more than 6 Kg less than our two empty suitcases. They also held more than the cases so we took more and weighed less. As we were self catering we were able to take some extras with us as well that we wouldn't have been able to with the suitcases. Just to be sure though we put two luggage straps around the holdalls. No problem at all, so our suitcases are now redundant

Best fiver I spent was on a portable luggage scale, it's very accurate so no excuse for being over the limit.

Our luggage scales go with us as well. Better to be safe than sorry, we were over a couple of years ago and paid a small fortune, so don't want it to happen again. Last year my daughter's fiance had Turkish Delight which pushed his luggage over the allowance, so he just carried it through the airport. Without the scales he would have had to pay as it would have been in his suitcase.

we have been abroad twice sometimes three times a year since the late eighties about 20 times to icmeler last september was the first time i have had to pay extra for luggage allowence i have got scales and was 1 kg over charged 15 pounds iasked why and just got the usual shrugged shoulders as they suddenly couldent speek english even when i pointed out that several more had gone through a lot over sooner than argue i paid but i think its a scam between the turks and the airlines i know my scalels are accurate who checks theirs after all east midlands airport last year was found to have some that were reading up to 3 kgs over total rip off another rip off is charging a pound for 2 plastic bags to put liquids in at check in mine was a quater inch too big

bags underweight going out yet over coming back with nothing bought

Every single person in the queue in Murcia had to pay

Me too, takes the worry away, previously would pick the case up - always thought it was too heavy but in reality never had a clue.
Quite relaxed now, plus the 22kg luggage allowance helps too

I got charged back in 2006. Yes we were over (our first holiday to Içmeler) and yes we had to pay but it was the fact that they put the exchange rate a lot higher than that in the resort (I think i was getting 2.6 in resort and they put it up to 3.2). We only had english money left so we paid over the odds.

If you are over then if you have to pay you have to pay but you shouldn't be getting ripped off (which always makes me think Sod 'Em).

Also if I was you I probably would have chanced it. Our suitcases were full of shorts, T-Shirts and prezzies that we had bought from the market (most of it was cheap tat to be honest) so if our suitcases didn't make it back with us then I wouldn't have lost much to be honest lol

Ive often paid excess baggage flying out to turkey and flying home again so last year i was determined to be a good girl and only pack what was needed, ( along with some goodies for our friends in icmeler, cheese, chocolate, etc etc)
I even bought baggage scales to check i was under my limit, so i was very pleased at newcastle airport when for the first time ever i was under weight ( my case not me ha ha ) , after a wonderful holiday i repacked my case to come home minus all the goodies for friends, minus all our toiletries and beach shoes etc that we left for the cleaners, i was very surprised to be charged excess baggage at dalaman!! how come? i had fewer things in my case , all the heavy toiletries etc were left in resort so how was my case over weight? and as someone else said ealier suddenly no one spoke enough english to understand, I paid the charge very reluctantly and noticed lots of people also paying and complaining, maybe Dalaman should buy luggage scales from pound land like me as they are more accurate than the airport scales.
