The world and his wife

Postby daddylanc » 22 Jul 2010 22:27

It may just be selective hearing, and that I am just rembering conversations that I would have previously sent to the recycle bin, but;

Everyone I speak to is going to Turkey this year. Not everyone, a mate comented last night that he may have Spain to himself this year. Is it busier than normal this year? I've been put off going to the Euro zone by the exchange rate. I'm not sure this is the only reason. I think we all become a bit more decerning in times of austerity.

So, is it pack to the rafters?

We went to Spain in April for a week, the first time to Spain in about 7 years - I think it will be a lot longer than that before the next Spanish trip.

Daddy,
Holidays in Icmeler are so friendly we will all automatically move over one leaving a space so you will fit in without any trouble.
You are right there are many people trying a Turkish holiday this year and the rave reviews on Forums like this can be one of the main reasons.
Icmeler can take it but the beech will be snug and we may have to wait that little bit longer to be served in restaurants....enjoy

Hi daddylanc

When I was in Icmeler one September a few years ago it was very busy. On one occasion the beach was full from front to back and end to end. Hubby and I went back to the hotel and spent the day round the pool. Restaurants were so full that you often had to sit at the bar for half an hour waiting of a table - this was most of the restaurants, not an odd one or two.

We went to Icmeler in June this year and it was certainly busier than it has been for some years. The beach was very busy but not full. However, the restaurants were comparatively quiet. There were tables available everywhere and some restaurants were empty. Many people are going for the all inclusive option (confirmed by the wristbands being worn on the beach).

I guess the answer to your question is yes, it's busy - but not as it used to be in the halcyon days.

We've been to Spain 3 times this year* always staying AI but any bar we've been in has been pretty quiet and they all blame the AI for that. Folks don't have the money to eat/drink out all the time because of the yooro.
Might be the same to a certain extent in Turkey this year!

*Don't assume that we're rich, a certain Mr O'Leary with his cheap flights and the fact that we can....ahem....bring back lots of GV to pass on pays for it all.

Hard to say.

I think that some destinations come and go out of "fashion" (for want of a better word).

In the 60's, Cortina in Italy was a top ski resort, very glam - now it's nearly unheard of.

Tossa De Mar in Spain - once "The" resort for package holidays, some holiday companies pulled out of there not so long ago because frankly no-one wanted to go there anymore. It had a reputation as where Uncle Keith went to drink vino you could also use for paint stripper, and bring back a straw donkey.

Fast forward to today - the resorts people want to go to - and this is just a general thing - Mainland Spain, Italian beach resorts (not that there's many) are out.
The hot resorts now for standard holidays are the Canaries, Cyprus (This is waning a bit), DIY hols (staying at someone you know's villa) in the Ballearics, then the up and coming places like Bulgaria (A lot of people go there ONCE and are stung), Turkey, and one of the big hotspots - Egypt.

It's just trends. In 10 years it might be Holiday Vietnam, or more likely the staycation in bucketting it down Britain.
