Children with Scales

Postby sandybeach » 20 Jul 2010 09:17

Last thing you want is to be weighed , as you know you all have put on weight on holiday. epecially in Icmeler where the food is so good. We went out at about 20:30 passed a few very young boys with the scales and politely said no but on the way back we passed them once again and one little lad stood out, he just looked totally deflated, I could not pass and not give him some money. We all gave 10 lira each, so 30 lira in total to the lad and he was absolutley over the moon. We saw the same lad the following the night and the smile we received from him was beaming and no he was not after a second weigh in xxxx

Just a little note here guys, and I am in no way being mean.

These kids families have premises in Icmeler, and are sent out by there parents to beg, this money is then taken off them by the parents.

You spend money in there shops, bars, restaurants and then give to there kids sat begging on the streets. There not soft they are taught how to put on the shy, cute little faces etc

There not begging cos they need money for a cup of tea or bar of soap, there begging cos there families are greedy.

Not genuine at all

Someone told us this years ago and we never give them anything - just say no thanks and keep walking.

Wow quite scared that at a such young age they will be trying to take the money off you in that way.

Lesson learnt

A few weeks ago I was over at the Bonjour or Chemist next door can't remember for sure but I crossed the road and jumped into my car and was about to pull away (broad daylight) when a face appeared from below on my passenger side window.

A beggar woman who is constantly being picked up by the Zabita was sitting with her back to my car and one of her babies was under the car in the shade.

Madness and the more people give to these beggars then the more they will get rich and then keep going.

Please do not give to any beggars

there always seems to be one on the Korsan / Venice side of the canal and they are normally there in the evening to catch people going out for dinner

Last year there were two fairly young children with scales on a stretch of pavement just up from where the Tandoori Sizzler is now - going towards Friends bar.

John, think we saw the woman you're talking about when we were there in June. She was sat on the floor, surrounded by three or four kids, and was crying and holding out her hands to us begging for money. This was about midnight and I felt so sorry for her and her kiddies but now I'm wondering if it was a scam. Can ALL these people be trying to rip us off ??

We may still see children with their scales but the shoe shine boys have disappeared from the scene, years ago they were everywhere but since trainers and flip became popular business stopped.

Yes, I'm afraid we fell for the little boy on the promenage with his scales. There was no way I was stepping on the scales! We gave him 5 lira.....................lesson learned.

Whlie we were waiting for our meal at Venice, A woman holding a baby came begging. I told her she should be ashamed using her baby like this and the baby looked very well fed.

They must make quite a bit of an evening when you think about it. They are clever though, they go out in the evening when they know the majority have had a few and are more likely to part with their money!

Seen the scale boys over the years, I did give the first year but was told that it was all a con, I even decided the first year to weigh the myself at the end of the holiday, stood on the scales then realised there was no needle, looked at the little chap who just grinned ear to ear. I now just ignore them and walk past.

I have also seen the old woman but she was quickly escorted from the restaurant I was in.

We always politely say no to the lads with the scales. Last year my parents were with us and one little lad asked us if we wanted to be weighed and when my mum politely said no thanks, he told her that she was too fat anyway and would break the scales!! It's a good job she's got a good sense of humour!
