We have yet to buy insurance for this years holiday
DIY flights ,accommodation booked last year +( transfer still to book ). With the Volocano still causing problems can anyone suggest a insurance company that would cover us for for the ACT OF GOD.
Or is it a case of keep everything crossed and hope we will be OK .

Sorry its just a case of everything crossed and hope for the best, the volcanic ash is now a known event so any insurance bought now will not cover cancellations because of it.

If you've not got insurance now, you won't be covered for anything related to the volcanic ash, unfortunately. If you bought insurance beforehand though, you might well be covered - best to check with your own insurer.

I've not got insurance either and I should know better working in the industry

Lesson learned though, everyone should buy their insurance as soon as they book their holiday

because we go away more than once in a year and at different times of the year
we just book an annual policy that covers the whole family for up to 120 days at any one time out of the UK
its cheaper than booking separate insurance for each holiday
we booked our insurance ages ago so will hopefully be covered for this ash cloud

You've got to watch with some of the annual family travel insurance policies though, katie. We changed ours this year because our previous insurer wouldn't cover us as a family any more because my daughter is now over 18. She would have had to take out a separate policy on her own. Their "family" insurance would only cover two adults and childrren under 18, so I think it pays to check what exactly each individual insurer actually covers.

You should have changed the policy to 3 adults and 1 kid.
Why would you think that they would insure a 18yr old as a kid?
18yr is old enough to drink, smoke, + vote ,so why do you think they should pay as a kid when it comes to insurance ?. .

Jeez. who rattled your cage - I was only pointing something out. Katie's over 18, so obviously as she has said, she's covered on her family's policy, but not every insurer does, as I said. I wasn't expecting to pay for my daughter as a child, but my previous insurer wouldn't cover us for three adults and a child - she would have to be insured separately, on her own. I did check my policy and knew what it was - it was only when I came to renew that this came to light. I'm only pointing out that different companies obviously have different rules when it comes to "family" policies, which might be useful information for others in similar positions.

We have annual insurance, and it runs out at the end of this month, we are going down tomorrow to check it out and get a renewal, should be interesting to see what changes are taking place.

Fingers crossed everything will be fine for when you go but if the worst comes to the worst you should be able to get a refund/re-booking on your flights I have no idea about accomodation and transfers though.

We go the same time as you so we have everything crossed that all will be well again by then

our insurance didnt change when i turned 18
didnt make a difference

Yes, that's what I'm pointing out, Katie - obviously different companies must have different rules when it comes to who exactly is allowed on a "family" policy, so some people could get caught out by it. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't queried it when ours came up for renewal, and that's why I switched to a different company (who, incidentally, wanted £250 LESS than our original insurers!)

yeah each company and policy can be different
thats how these companies make their money
by changing little details in the bottom of the policies
glad im still insured though dont fancy having to try and find my own policy

I thought several people had answered your original question - sorry for trying to be helpful and pass on what I felt might be useful advice for people thinking about taking out or renewing family travel insurance.
