Reading Katies post about Mosques(?) Is it possible that my wife and i could have a look around inside a
Mosque as a matter of interest, Will us being Christians cause any offence. We find most Turks very freindly
but Islamic faith may be a touchy subject.

there is a village tour trip that takes you to a mosque if its the same as when we did it a few years ago
everyone must take off their shoes
and the women must cover their heads, shoulders and legs and the men must have a shirt or t-shirt on
muslims take their religion very seriously and the tourists have to abide by their rules
but its nice to see inside another place of worship
obviously you cant go in at prayer time

We were lucky enough to be able to go into the mosque up in the Old Village last year. My husband is an R.I. teacher in a secondary school, so for him it was extra special as this is one of the religions that he teaches in school. The Imam (who is like their Vicar) was actually in the mosque with a group of children (it was like a sort of sunday school) and they gave us the most fantasic welcome when we arrived, and the Imam explained everything in detail to my husband on a one to one basis, which felt very personal.

We did of course have to follow their dress code which of course has to be respected, and we were allowed to take photos of the inside of the mosque. There was more of a personal feeling in this mosque compared to the one on the village tour, this one is not as grand as the one on the tour.

It is well worth a visit if you are on a walk up into the Old Village.

Do men have to wear long trousers to visit a mosque or are knee length non swim type shorts OK?

Can you tell me which mosque this was..... the one close to the school or the one close to cafe rose?...

i think shorts are ok but maybe you should check with other people to make sure that is correct
im sure my dad went in with knee length shorts on when we visited the mosque on the village tour trip though
turkish people just dont show that much flesh inside a religious building like a mosque and the tourists need to be covered too

Hi Jambogarry,

This was the mosque up in the Old Village. We usually end up in Cafe Rose as it is in the same location. We will probably visit the mosque again when we are in Icmeler (30th July to 20th August) Can't wait!

Met the Imam a few years ago (in the barbers of all places) and asked him about visiting the mosque. He was happy to arrange this but asked that my wife did not wear revealing clothing and that I wore long trousers. He also said we should avoid a Friday which is their prayer day. This was the old mosque near Cafe Rose.

yeah they wont let you in on a friday as thats the muslims religious day
like in the UK its a sunday
women should wear tops that arent low either
if you visit the ones in icmeler they are probably more strict than the ones on the village tour because they will be used to visitors on the trip
but the ones in icmeler might not be

Thanks for the answer, I normally don't take long trousers with me but will pack a pair just in case.
