I for one am not looking at these alterations negativly.
I think a lot needed to be done to downsize the amount of bars and the quality of some of them.
Kitchen and toilet areas in several places were lacking.

These new alterations fill me with excitement as it is not only me who would like Icmeler to retain her charm.
Big is not always beautifull and I still think of Icmeler as a quaint holiday resort full of charm.

Last year saw the reintroduction of the barrows selling pies etc. and we have got used to the new promenade.
We do get used to the changes given time and as has been mentioned, newcomers to our favourite resort will not know any difference

We are really looking foreword to our holiday in May/June after our Icmeler has had her makeover.

Thanks for those, cath - certainly gives us all here a much better impression of what is going on. Let's just hope, as others have said, that it all works out okay in the end...

Thanks for the explanation Rami, one thing I don't understand, so the roof is pulled back 2 metres from the sidewalk, your sitting in there eating you dinner etc the place is full of people and it starts to have an Icmeler rainstorm ? What happens ? Apart from the fact you and your dinner get soaked ?

Also, what difference to Icmeler does it make if the roof is 2 metres from the sidewalk ? It's not like you are likely to trip over it like you would do them massive big pineapple tree things that sprout out of the pavement and cut your arms on the way past ?

Confused.com

On a plus side, a huge thanks to Cath for the piccies :D

Perhaps the word "Demolition" got us a wee bit hot under the collar.

I for one, thought that there were a shade to many bars and restaurants when we were in Icmeler in September.

So trimming the numbers, in my opinion, should make for a better experience.

Here's hoping, because although we thought we may not get back there until 2011, it looks like we may have a chance for late September/ early October 2010.

I have to agree with other people who have posted re this maybe being not such a bad thing, there were/are too many bars/restaurants which is why many were empty. Looking forward to my visit next year to see all the changes as change is not always a bad thing :)

But I still don't understand WHAT difference this will make to Icmeler? If the bars should have abided by these laws 10 years ago when some of them were built then wasn't this the same mayor that was in seat at that time ? Not a very good mayor then was he !!! So why put him back into power, geesh we wouldn't re elect our ex goverment!

What difference will it make pulling the roof back 2 metres ?

All the cats are starving and being poisoned, but hey lets demolish a few roofs and waste money!

It's political it HAS to be...... Pulling a few roofs back and knocking a few places down won't get Turkey into the EU quicker!!

Politics !!! I hate them

looking at the photos ,people can see more clearly what is happening, and i like many others think this is good, and as for the taj mahal,it looks like its here for next year as when the place is shut for the season it always looks like that except for the back were it has been torn down a little, but the food is not cooked in the taj anyway its in the hotel kitchen that you can see in the photo,so i think we still may be able to took into the onion bhaji's next year

thanks for the photos cath and nice pictures of the cats for colette

Thanks for the explanation Rami, it certainly gives us a little more insight into what is happening in our adopted town.

On our last holiday, I definitely thought the charm was lacking a little, I am now really looking forward to returning in June 2010.

Thanks Cath for the photographs, its great to see a little of whats happening and I am glad for you the rain has stopped :D

To be honest, I think it was the idea of possible whole-scale demolitions going on which had people worried - now that we've seen some pictures of what is actually happening, and had explanations from Rami and so on, I think it will put people's minds at rest a bit.

Still can't wait to get back for my next Icmeler "fix"... :D

Ok, I should have explained it in more depth so the 2meter rule etc makes sense.

Lets imagine a shop that can only have enough seats for 16 patrons. This shop also has an outher space classified as its garden. Lets not forget that in Turkey, when you have a piece of land, you can only construct a building on a certain portion of it and the rest of it has to be left for garden, pool, playground etc. this ratio does change from area to area however, the usual in this region is 20% of the land with a permit of 2 floors. Back in the days, the ratio was about the same but the permit for how many floors you can build was much higher, that is why you will see Aqua and Munamar and Devamli hotel with higher amount of levels.

Back to your imaginary shop: Your garden area for this shop is quiet big, so you decide to put some tables and chairs in this area as well. Then, it starts raining or starts getting cold, so you decide that you will put tents, next time around, you got more money so you decide to put a roof over this area, then you go ahead covering the sides of this premises with various meterials...your 16 patron capacity shop is now big enough to serve 100 customers...wow! but, your shop is a certain size and only has a big enough kitchen to cook up some snacks for your 16 patrons....but you want to cook steaks and eggs, leg of lamb, straganoffs, pides, starters etc for 100 customers... so you change things around in your shop, you turn the shop in to a full kitchen and use the garden area as your dinning area...and since you have no space left inside, you need a bar so you add that in the garden as well...goes on and on...
there are many small shops in this town available to serve 16 patrons at a time...but not many available to serve 100 at a time (at least legally)
So, years go by and now you have enough SHOPS to serve approximately 60,000 customers at a time, however not legally so this increases and creates unfair competition between those doing legal operations to serve 100 and those turning a 16 seater in to a 100 seater...what goovernment is doing now is cracking down on this to stop this practice to at last before it gets out of hand even more...the council of icmeler is against competition of bars just by using the price factor..they want less places but higher quality in products served.
They dont want businesses to fight over customers and involve in criminal activities...they dont want tourist hassled and in order to stop all of these at once, they are snipping out those businesses that dont have enough space to run a proper restaurant or a bar...by law you need a kitchen with a certain size to get a license...but before, you needed to be in the good books or fork out a donation to do the same - things are changing but when finished, I know Icmeler will be a definite winner...to bad some people had to be sacrificed to get things in order.

makes sense now Colette?

So its all down to red tape and legalities, I understand it better now, but will it stop bar owners putting tables in the open area, and my dinner getting wet ? will have to take an umbrella with me
