I think this Mayor is on a mission to destroy Icmelers tourist trade, as non of his plans make sense to me.

can't say I blame them for not wanting to go into the rain FBC, especially given the circs!

I've had a look on the Icmeler Council site and it seems they've got plans for a children's nursery, sports centre with all weather pitch and a dog's home - if you get in there quick Col, you may be able to get them to include something for the cats too

Yes the Bonjour will still be there, and all building work has to stop by some time in April so don't worry you will be fine :D

100% agree. I can understand how he wants to cut down music as well as other issues but he's going the totally wrong way about it. At this rate, he will scare tourists away. If he wasn't bothered by the businesses and was unhappy because of an 'illegal build' then surely he would of told businesses what they could do to make it a 'legal' build. It's a real shame for a lot of the places that they're demolished and they probably don't get a penny for it either.

I think the mayor has certainly made his mind up that he does not want Kurdish businesses or music in Icmeler.

I've been told most of the old village will be untouched but if anybody gets the chance then let me know if there has been any developments in that area.

think you've hit the nail on the head there JOhnny, esp as the Icmeler council site is full of the improvements they want to make to the area

have to say though, that regardless of the "nationalities" of those whose bars are being pulled down, it's not so long ago that people on here [me included] were expressing concern about the numbers and types of bars that were springing up

dont think the guy's doing himself any favours amongst the hardworking seasonal workers and bar owners in Icmeler though , but if he's reining in the expansion and volume that's been taking over these past few years, maybe it's no bad thing?!

and if his daughter's bar was the first to be demolished, looks like he's taking no prisoners, nor showing favoritism

can totally see why he may be thinking of having "personal security" though :D

Some of the bars 'deserved' to be demolished but what will the canal look like when they have finished?
Cant believe there is no one willing to go out in the rain - it must be just like here in the uk

He's a bloke, cath - and we all know they've got no patience whatsoever! Anyway, your updates are much appreciated - it's good to get information from someone "on the ground" as it were, and we're happy to wait until the rain goes off, honest!

the sports bar under the devamli will be fine
spoke to one of the workers there and he said the owner has too much clout in icmeler
will be very surprised if it gets knocked down
sad to hear about all the bars that have been knocked down :(

Hmm, I understood from cath's post on the first page of this thread that the Sports Inn had already been affected - are you saying that's not the case, katie?

If the mayor's own daughter's premises are among those which have been demolished (or partly demolished) then I wouldn't bank on anyone having too much clout to be affected by the changes...

All these demolishons are happening in Marmaris and Gumbet on a large scale as well, maybe all the mayors are getting their orders from higher up!!,and they have no say.

According to Land of flights,it appears there are 4704 premises in Turkey that are being demolished due to contravention of planning. These consist of the following in Marmaris area, which may well encompass Icmeler.

693 residences
148 commersial concerns
20gangplanks(?)
8 fillings(??)
2 stables
2 purification systems
1 garage
1 fish pool
1 wall along the coast(!)
1 construction site

Total = 877

However, Total demolitions for Marmaris are 1377.

Where are the other 500?

ok, maybe its time I make an explanation to what is going on.

Lets say some one says the sports bar is being demolished....Nope! That just means the roof of the bar is getting pulled back so it has a distance of 2mt from the sidewalk. But the bar is still there and the owner is not stupid, he will go and purchase mobile umbrellas to protect its customers from the sun and the bar will steill operate.

This goes for every other place you can think of unless it was built illegally.

If places that were built illegally get demolished, then the tenants will take legal action incase they had already paid rent for them for a year in advance and get their money back, but as someone else said before, anyone who has not been to icmeler before would not know the difference at all.

Lets look at it this way. There are 20,000 beds in Icmeler. This means, 20,000 of you lovely people show up in Icmeler at a given period of 14 nights. Lets now say, all of you dine out properly at various restaurants...even if you all go out and eat, there are 60,000 chairs in icmeler so at least 2/3 of the restaurants are empty.

What is happening here is the mayor is down sizing on establishments. the way to do it is, by applying the lawas in place...x amount of space for kitchen, x amount of covered space, x amount of washrooms and space etc etc...
This is not so bad...when its all finished, all bars and restaurants may actually make business and be happy about the season after all. Also, this will stop the hassling and will increase the quality of goods and services..The only problem I see is, why did it have to be this way. the laws that trying to be implemented today were the same 10 years ago, so if thats the case, why did you allow these people to invest at the time and now making them loose out...simple answer, council back then needed the money for registering businesses and licences and now, not in so much of a need, so lets play by the rules now....ok...but still not fair...i was bad but i am god now or i was good and i am bad now is not the answer...i used you but i wont anymore is the answer and that i dont aggree with.

Compensate all those you effect and then implement those new laws is the only way you will be remembered respectfully.

Thanks for the explanation Rami. I agree with you the council has been underhanded about it. But the councils in the UK arent much better.

Thanks Rami.

That clarifies things very well.

It seems the word "Demolition" maybe doesn't apply to every establishment then.

I'm still concerned about the gangplanks and fillings though :?

Thanks Rami, So when we return in May we will find a modified Icmeler to the one we left behind in 2009. A few places may of closed down but I am almost certain most will relocate and start a fresh. We can only wait and hope that the end product has been worth it and the restuarants and bars effected have a good 2010 to cover thier expense.
