Hello,

We own a property in Altinkum that we have hopefully sold after 2 years on the market as we prefer Icmeler and bought there last year after holidaying for about 5 years. If you love Icmeler, you'll hate Altinkum as it's totally different and it is very large and getting bigger by the day. The apartments are everywhere and yes, you can get them for £17k but £35k is more realistic, but you'll walk about 2 miles to the beach or the beach bars. When we bought ours, it was about 3/4s of a mile from the town and we were on the edge of everything. Now, everything extends for another 2 miles or so right into Didim and further back past the Apollon temple.

The bars are either 'Little Britain' or Blackpool types, not as friendly as Icmeler and it's a Turkish resort in the summer, so most of Istanbul and Ankara visit their apartments as well. Beach space is normally standing up or a mile away on third beach, but now they're building a marina near there, so not much space left now and the bay is reduced in size as well.

We were tempted by the prices in 2004 when we went to Altinkum for a fortnight as you can't get a good family room with seperation there and bought a 3 bed apartment and used it well, but we had to come to Icmeler for a few days every time we were over. If you buy, I expect you'll do the same and it's a 420km return trip. One thing I was told recently was due to the large number of new apartments and the 16% commission paid to the agents, you won't sell a resale property for more than you paid. Once all the new ones are sold, you might stand a chance, but they are never ending.

Hopefully I've done a good job for John and Rami here as I know they will agree with me. Icmeler is a far superior village, more friendly and a home to come back to year after year.

And the Efes is colder!

One more thing I will add Seeing Clive has spoken about Altinkum is..........

If it had been the first resort that I had visited in Turkey then I may have never returned to Turkey and ICR may may not be here as it is today so its a good job I went to Altinkum on a later visit.

I don't think that is a fair comment every one has there own tastes it is up to the individual wether or not they like a place,we have holidayed in Altinkum and although it is far bigger than Icmeler and more building work is going on,we found the people to be very friendly and we did find nice bars to drink, and we were nowhere like 2 miles out of town,I would not put someone off holidaying there if they so wished but to say you would hate it.

George if you are referring to my comment then what is not fair about it.

Am I not to have an opinion of my own or do we have to just adhere to your own opinions.

I visited Altinkum well before any building sites were even thought of and the streets were just pot holes.

There was a fairground up on the hill and we spent most of our time on 3rd beach which we really enjoyed because there were NO beggars or sales people prodding you awake to flog you their wares and over priced fruit and drinks because the bar owner wouldn't let them near.

There were beggars everywhere and some sitting with babies all day in the blistering heat (which we found out were rented from people).

I will say again that if we had visited Altinkum then for the first time then I probably would now be speaking smatterings of Spanish or God forbid french

Snap Natajack, another Huyton resident here :D

It does seem hard to sell a place in Turkey, i know a lady who has her house up for sale next door to my apartment in Icmeler and she has been trying to sell it for about 2 years now but i've not heard anything about them stopping foreigners buying in Turkey.

I watched the holiday homes from hell as I said on an earlier post.
I don't think I actually mentioned the homes that were destroyed by fire because as you say that is not the builders fault, it is the other homes and there were quite a few that had cracks appearing up the walls that looked like there had been an earthquake!
That is certainly the fault of the builders.

No Admin it was nothing to do with your comments everyone is allowed an opinion I was addressing Sylvnclives comment no matter what my opinion of a place wether good or bad I would never try and impose my opinion on someone else by saying you would hate it that is the opinion of who ever goes there not mine.

George

There has been quite a few times that Altinkum has been mentioned on our forum and I have bit my lip each time as it would look like I was having a bash at it because I am of course biased towards Icmeler but as Clive had lived there and made a few comments I thought well time to air my views also.

If everyone had the same opinion on things then the world would be one bad boring place and everywhere would look the same.

All I know is when I am out in Icmeler me and Rami and a few friends used to bunk of every other weekend and go and visit different resorts around Turkey and even Greece and I don't think I could put into words the feeling we had (and that was all of us) as we came over the mountain from Mugla or even along from the other direction Koycegiz and caught sight of the green fields and pine forests that make up the area we all know and love on this forum.

I think there will always be parts of Turkey people either love or hate, same with everywhere i guess.

I had holidays in Altinkum 8 times on the trot and had fantastic times there and made some great friends, some of who i still keep in touch with now. 1st time i went was 1993, although it's been years since i have been there i would go back again one day, although now i believe the resort is huge and even looking on the internet i don't recognise it now, some compare it to Blackpool,it may well be like that but my memories of the place are not like that at all.

Gumbet on the other hand i was there a few years ago and it's not my cup of tea at all, i wouldn't put people off going though even tho i wouldn't step foot in there again, some people i know holiday there all the time and love it.

I also liked Alanya and loved Icmeler when i went for the first time last year,a lady in my work was in Icmeler about 3 years ago and didn't like it.

This year i'm staying in Marmaris is Armutulan area, people i know don't like MArmaris but hey i'll try it and see what i think.

As has been mentioned before if we all had the same opinion the world would be a boring place!

Happy Holidays everyone :D

Fair do's John I am not condemning anyone we have been to Turkey 5 or 6 times now Marmaris,Gumbet,Icmeler,Altinkum also Spain loads of times Greece Cyprus and Bulgaria,I would always give people advice on my experiences likes and dislikes don't come into it,as you have just said we are all different and want different things from holidays I would always try and let people make up there own minds unless I was asked outright for an honest opinion, but that is just me.
