I've only been to Icmeler twice third time will be next August and trust me I love the place. Would I move there? Yes if I was rolling in money, otherwise no. Most people love their holiday destinations because it's a magical 2 weeks every year, if lucky a couple of times a year (ive never been that lucky) but I'd imagine the magic wouldn't be the same if you actually lived there, as the saying goes you can have to much of a good thing. Don't get me wrong life is to short, and I personally think for my kids generation this country is finished, so if I was young I'd go for it. The thing that gets me though is I've spoke to a lot of people in the times I've been in Icmeler and they'd love to live in England. Is the grass really greener?

i love icmeler and this summer was amazing but i was watching what i spent as i didnt manage to get a job as they are clamping down on people out there without work permits
so if you cant work legally i would think twice about the money

Get a sensible head on! I have seen so much of this in the west of Scotland with people from the sunny south east thinking that they have found Shangri La after two or three weeks holiday in the summer, selling up and buying property here. Reality strikes home during the winter and the reality of the climate and inability to adapt comes home to roost. So many last until the next spring and disappear back from whence they came and often at a great financial loss.

Grass greener, very often not. If you are determined, try a 3 month lease from November to February and if you can hack it, go for it.

People who come to Icmeler for holidays in Summer would not recognise the place in Winter. Hardly anywhere open, its like a ghost town and it rains, rains, rains. I have lived here for a number of years now and it is not Shangri La out of season.
Regarding working here Turkish law says you need a work permit to be employed here and if you are caught working without one it means instant deportation for a time of up to five years. Work permits are very hard to come by
and even the Travel Reps have been struggling this season with quite a few facing deportation.
Turks believe - rightly so?? that the jobs should first go to Turkish nationals.
So think very carefully before you make the move and maybe give up lucrative employment in the U.K.
I am retired so Ok for me

Sorry U.K. and dont mean to be a wet blanket but nothing is as easy as you think. May be different if and when Turkey join the E.U.

i think that you should maybe go for a holiday for a month or so in the winter and see if you like it out of season
then you can make a better decision
hope this helps :)

Arlene, I don't think you're being a wet blanket. I'm sure most of us have harboured thoughts about moving to Icmeler at some point as we soak up the sun and enjoy everything it has to offer during our holidays, but it would be naive of anyone to think things would be as idyllic all year round. As weetoony has pointed out, it's bad enough when you see people who have moved to Scotland on similar grounds, only to realise it's a completely different prospect in the depths of winter. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see what Icmeler is like in winter, but I think anyone seriously planning a permanent move needs to go into it on the back of a great deal of research and with their eyes fully open.

Hi guys,

As someone who's lived out here for the past 6 years - here's a few pros and cons......You WILL need a work permit, which is hard to get if you want bar work - rep work would be ideal - if you can get it. They are so tightening up on people working without permits - it's a 4 year deportation if caught! Generally, you have to work long hours - in the heat of the Summer; lucky if you get 1 day off a week. Wages are very low so you may need to supplement your own money for accommodation. Winter living.... for an 'old bint' like me, it's ideal. I so love the peace & quiet but if you're young; you could get sooo bored. It IS like a ghost town here in the Winter - you could walk for an hr without seeing a soul! but it's fab to go walking, sunbathing - or even swimming in the sea in November and an 'exciting' night out, is to go to a quiz - with maybe some bingo thrown in woo! woo! And yes, we get lots of rain - monsoon-like! The nights can get very cold (though not nearly as cold as the UK!). Cost of living....on average £3k per year for a small apt and a great saving, is we have no tv licence, council tax etc. Water can be expensive, as is electric. Red meat - what's that?! Yes, it is expensive. Chicken is my main feast - 2 large chicken breasts - approx £3.50. But hey, a loaf of yummy fresh bread is only 30p! Seasonal fruit & veg is cheaper than the UK. Also, you can get very good discounts in the few restaurants/bars open in the Winter.

Hope this gives you an overview of living out here. I love it!

Well I see it as you only live once and if moving to Icmeler is something you dream of then why not follow it. Dont make your descision on problems which havent occured yet, just face them as the come. And you dont have to live there all the year round, also prices are rising in the UK aswell now so the price of living really doesnt mean anything aslong as you are happy.
