If you buy direct, your credit card covers you as the flights aren't atol bonded. If you buy through an agent, they are Atol bonded, so you need to claim through Atol.

This was what I was led to believe but I'm sure Admin could clarify. :D

and you have paid with your Visa card, you can get your money back (subject to your bank’s terms and conditions).

It could be one of the banks terms that if you have Atol cover you must 1st try to get your money back that way. I was directed to use Atol by the travel agency and they checked the Atol form and claimed for me.

It would be interesting to find out what other people have done to claim their monies back.

I think anything is worth a try as some are waiting for months for their money back, if the bank will do it they claim back the money off the travel agents and then the travel agents have to claim it back off atol, will let you know how my dad gets on. The company my dad has gone with just told him to fill the form in and basicallydo it yourself

I also did a lot of research before I booked and couldn't get anything with Thomson - in fact, I've never found anything with them for the dates I've been after. I didn't even KNOW my flights were with Kiss - that wasn't made clear at the time of booking!

I spend quite a lot of time researching my holidays to try and get what I think is the best deal. I speak to a lot of people who seem obsessed with booking with some obscure travel firm that might save a couple of quid. The last two holidays I have beeked to Icmeler have been packages through T...son.

They have actually been cheaper than any other tour operator I have tried. Including non package deals.

We had 2 flights cancelled one was with Globespan and I'm sure most people would agree that they we'rnt an obscure travel firm!

Indeed, Diane - there have been high-profile casualties in the travel industry as well as the so-called "obscure" ones.

Sympathies to anyone else who has been affected in this way - luckily for us, I have now managed to fix up alternative flights, albeit from Newcastle, so we will get our holiday after all, and hopefully will also get our money back eventually. Hope others are equally fortunate.

i was also booked with kiss flights but i was informed at the end of june by my travel company that my flight were cancelled and to rebook them, i decided against this and had a total refund from my travel company which only took 7 days to transfer back into my bank account. I think i was one of the lucky ones and knew about this 7 weeks ago. But was not so lucky in july as i was with gold trail and got stuck in turkey airport at 3 in the morning with no flight home. It certainally has made me think twice about who i travel with in the future. I cannot understand why it has took kiss flights this long to let everyone know as it was obvious they knew about this in july when i was informed, i think i had a lucky escape and well done to my travel company for letting me know so soon, so i did not have all the hassel of having to claim my money back the hard way. I hope everyone gets all the money back

We aren't fortune tellers and nobody knows which company can go bust next - who could predict XL or Goldtrail etc. When you book flights with any agent they can put you on any flight they choose so even if you had booked flights with Thomsons you could have still lost them if the carrier had went bust.

As for Thomsons being cheaper than competitors, I don't think you have looked hard enough. Our 1st Turkey holiday was with Thomsons and it was the same price as our last 2 years holidays put together. Checked out what our holiday was this year and Thompsons was £3000 more than what we got it for with a so called obscure agent. It didn't quite work out that way, as we were caught up with the Goldstar saga, but how else would you get an August holiday in Turkey, self catering for 8 people, 3 rooms, for under £2500.00, certainly not with Thomsons.

John

First things first. My post was not intended as a wind up or to offend anyone. I truly sympathise with anyone who has their holiday plans scuppered.

I tried to make a point based on my own experiences and by the looks of it I made it very badly.

All I will say is that Thomon have provided me with the cheapest packages above any other tour operator for my last two holidays.

Couple of hours at the most - we have flown from Newcastle before, although we try to stick to Edinburgh or Glasgow if at all possible. Still, I'd rather fly from Newcastle than have to miss my next Icmeler fix! :)
