Eric... we have been going to Icmeler for the last 6 years.. M.Jackson... they do need to move on... it is boring me now... oh and Tina Turner... they need to get different acts...

As for Dominican... that's where we've just come back from this year (gave Icmeler a rest this year) and needless to say... we've just booked to go back next year :) (Dom Rep that is) As long as you pick a good hotel and resort you won't be disappointed.. Ours was top notch.. never spent so much time on a beach or in the sea... it was everything I thought it would be... deffo a chillout holiday.. completely different to Turkey so be prepared if you do decide to give it a go...

Yes I agree that Icmeler has changed.

We arrived back late last night and feel we may give it a miss next year.
It seemed very expensive this year and it does not help with the exchange rate being poor.

I was so looking forward to our holiday this year but felt it had changed some how. We still had a lovely time and met up with old friends.

Problem is,if we give it a miss after 7 years where do we go next year?

19 Aug 2008 08:28

I am going back to icmeler in october ,third time in a year , i have also booked to go next summer .
but iam sure that if i keep going for 7 years in a row i to will become a bit jaded with the place. its new to me and my wife so its ok just now.
we were in porto rico gran canaria for a week in april, i can asure you that was long enough for me ,it was expensive it was loud when you have 10 bars playing different tunes all at the same time in a very small area well i think any body that has bein to porto rico will get the picture.
So dont knock icmeler at least they are trying to part you from your money, the brits and the spaniards who run the bars and resturants know you will spend your money and dont even try.

i normally go to icmeler every year but went to another resort in turkey named 'hisaronu' this year due to a friend being their. the hassle in the two resorts is no comparison, walking down the street in hisaronu was a real pain as every shop "had something to tell you" and wanted to know "which perfume you liked best". in icmeler i find the hassle low key, i can walk down the street easily without feeling ignorant as i ignore the shouts as in icmeler there is much less hassle. Ive heard a few people say they were going to give icmeler a miss next year which is what i did this year as i went to hisaronu, i thought it would be a nice break from the repetition of icmeler but i have to say i really missed the place and it is secnd to non, with having been to icmeler you will compare you next holiday resort to it and how are you going to top great scenary/views, fantastic hospitality, constant fabulous weather and all round enterainment for everyone? after my year out from icmeler, i can truly say i am getting withdrawal syptoms from not going ha and tis is why i am booking a month and a half in icmeler in june 2009...bring on the icmeler...again! I have every faith that all the views on this forum will be listened to by the council in Icmeler, I spoke to a man who owns a restuarant/bar which he wishes to be a nice traditional turkish place, with music at a reasonable level, and I must say it's an oasis in the middle of two or three very loud bars/restuarants. He, and others like him are determined to get the point across to the council that the excessive noise affects all businesses, as most people who frequent Icmeler have enjoyed a nice mixture in the past. Yes we all like a bit of music and fun, but "volume" is my only problem. We visited Marmaris in July on our last visit and even they seem to have the knack of keeping their own music within their own remits, so I'm sure Icmeler can sort that out, that way we would all be able to enjoy what we like within the remit of our own personal favourite places.
I love the place and I hope they can all come to an understanding of everybody's reasons for their love of the place. The alternative is a very empty Icmeler in the future, it can't even begin to compete with the younger set's needs as it closes at midnight, so lets hope it realises the potential it has in it's already loving audience.

We got back last Wednesday from what was our 19th visit to Icmeler. Usually we come back 100% satisfied (but very sad) and can't wait until the next one. This year, however, we had quite a few complaints - and we are not fussy people in the slightest and are happy to go with the flow and just enjoy ourselves.

Whilst we don't object to the dance bars and the loud music (as they are reasonably spaced out, and lot's of quiet bars can be found), we got fed up of the "same old, same old" - sick of Michael Jackson, Brake dancers, Full Monty, Dance with the devil, macerena, saturday night, cha cha slide etc, etc., Do they really think we like that stuff, over and over again ?

Also felt quite "ripped off" at times after repeatedly seeing extra drinks on bills. I ordered a cheese & onion toastie in one bar to be told that they hadn't made them for years, so I ordered a hamburger instead. When the bill came the toastie was on it too, priced at 19 YTL - work that one out. Unless it was a bar we completely trusted, we started paying bills at regular intervals to avoid misunderstandings (as they called them).

The quality of service in the restaurants was not up to the usual high standard I noticed. Having to ask for cutlery, condiments etc - usually unheard of. At first I put it down to being peak season, but then realised it wasn't actually that busy. Quite a lot of the waiters also seemed moody and grumpy - could have been the hot weather though (but again not the norm).

A few other things - got 8 sunbeds and was charged 5 YTL each (yeah, they saw me coming alright - that didn't happen again), Jeep safari charging 40 YTL for the DVD which was only 20 YTL in October last year. Man on canal trying to charge 65 YTL for FAKE prada flip-flops. Over priced Fake designer gear that used to be so cheap.

Spent £400 more on the two week holiday than we did in October, and didn't do anything other than what we normally would. Less in fact, I didn't go to a salon once, and I usually have my hair done every other day and get nails and feet done too. I know a lot of it is due to the poor exchange rate, but certainly not all of it.

Has it put us off going to Icmeler - NO, but next time we will be more wary, eat at cheaper restaurants and make sure we get all the clothing we need in England.

OK, rant over  Icmeler is still the best resort in the world.

21 Aug 2008 16:07

Kazza that could of be me typing that, I agree 100% with everything you said, quality of the bars, ripped off etc etc.I did have a moan about it when I got back but I thought we were just unlucky and went to the wrong bars, shops etc but I heard quite a few while we were over there saying the same sort of thing. As for the grumpy staff, we did notice this. The market seemed a bit more 'desperate' this yeat. One lady got spat at because she decided not to buy something at a stall. She made it clear to everyone around her by shouting at the top of her voice, not to buy anything from the man because he spat at her, then went off to find the police that seemed to be hanging around every corner. We were dead certain before our holiday this year we had found somewhere we would want to go back to every year as it seemed to have everything we wanted in a holiday. I really hope it goes back to the way it was. I have a feeling next year will be tough for them as what with the economy and some deciding to try somewhere else (like we are considering) they will have more competition.

21 Aug 2008 18:06

We did try someware else this year and got the best of both worlds, we went to Turunc and went to Icmeler for a long week end. I agree with all the comments on this thread, but can note remember ever being ripped of anyware, but as mentioned some of the traders must have there heads in the clouds if thay expect folk to pay some of the proces thay are asking. Oh by the way Turunc was just like Icmeler was years ago so any one looking for a nice relaxing holiday give it a try and you can still get your Icmeler fix in.

Admin, you guys have been quiet on this topic. have you any thoughts on why there have been so many negative comments. To be honest it is very unusual to hear negative comments about Icmeler, its only really been these past few months. Are we the customer expecting too much now??

We are watching this thread with interest :D

Would be nice to see a thread about things people like and want to stay the same in Icmeler *hint*

21 Aug 2008 18:59

I still love Icmeler for the laid back feel it still has in the quietr areas etc. But I do think if it wasn't for Marmaris being so close, as we go and see Bella Baserk drag show at least 3 nights a week (different show every night of the week) I would be bored of it by now. But we like to stay in icmeler for its beauty and always stay in the quiter parts.

Kilda,

I don't only understand what you are saying but I also agree with you. I actually saw this coming a few years back since all we have had in resort for entertainment was the cha cha and the kiss kiss and for god sakes, still have those. The problem here is that, majority of the holiday makers do still enjoy some of these entertainments along with MJ. And, when this is the case, the managers of bars etc continue to offer the same enterainment...and people who are fed up with it (me me me) are stuck either listening to motown, 70's 80's or boys dancing all over the place to various songs which you probably could not even find original cd's to anymore.
But, is icmeler about night life and entertainment and does the entertainment have to be classed as the things offered only around you. No, I think there are still some other things to do around icmeler which would actually balance things up on a holiday. For example, going for a dinner to Cinar or Riverside out side of marmaris for the night. Gokova for the day, Turunc for the day and the bays around it. Marmaris armutalan area as well as a stroll on the marina. Having a drink at the Netsel Marina (which is just past the harbour) Icmeler is an excellent resort but definitely not an entertainment resort esspecially when the music goes off at 12:00.Other things could be to explore other side of marmaris, Aktas, False Passage (yalanci bogaz) and ada agazi. only 3 km outside of marmaris but is different to icmeler and marmaris and is enjoyable during the day and at evenings. There are restaurants 3 restaurants in Aktas are which of all are set on the beach and have nighly entertainment of just a man playing a guitar...may work out better for you than a MJ show....does for me anyway:)
Hopefully, they will build a bar street int he future away from the centre so those who want the hussle can go there and those who want a relaxing night in town an stay in and around the centre or else, the number of regulars leaving icmeler like your selves will increase day by day and this is definitely not the solution to the hassle problem to start with.
Please continue writing on this matter and give in ideas of what else could be done to improve the holiday experience in icmeler and i will once again pass these ideas to the council and esspecially the new one that is due to start next year if not earlier.

Thank you
Rami

Maybe it's time you locked this thread if you have enough opinions on it, but you did ask. Most comments have been made in the interest of business for the turkish people, because we all love Icmeler, and want to help. I don't think any of us want to labour on negatives.

RE:- Rami previous post

Hi Rami
With the greatest respect re:- your comment on building a "Bar Street" you must know Icmeler as well as I do,
and I cant see anywhere to build it, the only land available is in the residental area or the old village and that would be ridiculous and certainly the downfall of Icmeler
Icmeler has got, "bar streets", all ready up and running.and what would replace these properties, if the bar street was built??
I can understand your reasoning with this to a point!!.
But the logistics etc would make it more or less impossable
Keep the noise etc where it is
Dont inflict it on others, and who I must add are mainly residents, both Turkish and ex-pat of this beutifull place, and not holidaymakers just here for a week or two.

please please please, no bar street for icmeler - we can go to Marmaris for that

22 Aug 2008 20:38

Hi all, we have just come back from our 4th visit to Icmeler and like many of you, we found the noise levels from some of the bars was ear bleeding loud. So loud it was uncomfortable to sit in the bar as you could have no conversation with any of your own company or any one else who were there. We did find a bar that played music at a reasonable level where you could still have a conversation and many people came in because of this, but when the bar next door saw the amount of people that were coming in they cranked up the volume so loud the bar we were in was drowned out by the other bars music. So in return our bar turned up thier music. The volume battle commenced and we, plus many others left them to it. Perhaps one solution to the noise polution that has hit Icmeler lately is to have the device that some bars/clubs have in the UK, where if the volume exceeds a certain limit it cuts the power supply to the music systems. Don't get me wrong,...I like sitting in bars listening to music, but, there's nothing worse than listening to another bars music at the same time. :(

We have been going to Icmeler for the passed 11 years. And sadly I agee with some of your comments. We love the turkish people and the food so we have changed our resort to a new place in Turkey. And we found a little gem, infact booked again next year. We noticed last year, younger English group of people visiting Icmeler drinking large amounts of beer. No problem with this, having fun, however saw afew fights with local owners with some of the younger end after drinking alot of beer. Infact we got caught up in one,not nice when your family are with you. Icmeler will have a special place in our hearts. But the passed 2 years noticed a big change from a family resort. It looks like Icmeler is turning into Mini Maramaris.

I guess, getting older you change your views and our family now has grown up, so Bev and I travel as a couple. New places to visit. It's a big world out there.

Take care

Steve
