Mobile Phones

Postby bec » 26 Mar 2008 14:12

Hey guys

I think this may have already been asked a while ago..but i cant find it.
As some may know i'm going to Icmeler for season..(4weeks left wooo) anyways i'm wondering whats the best thing to do about my mobile.
As i have heard that english mobiles get shut off :?

I'm wondering do i just buy a Turkish sim and use in my own mobile...or do i buy a little cheap phone in Turkey and turkish sim etc.

Any help appreciated
xx

Sorry just to add..its not necesarily for ringing/texting home ...just for getting in touch with people over there. As i will probably use phone cards to call home and that

Facing the "S" hotel not on its doorstep.

Look down and right for the shop next to the building with the tiled roof so on opposite corner

From John in another post :D

Oh, dont mobile phones work over there then. I just thought I had to let my service provider (doesnt that sound posh) know I was going and it would be o.k. That is all I have ever done before, but then I have only been to mainland europe I guess.

What an eye opener.

See how great this site is.

Ok before anyone else gets confused.

Yes your mobile will work over there with YOUR OWN service provider.

Take that sim card out and put a Turkish one in and the Turksh government will block it as they want you to pay the import tax on the phone after many years and many 1,000s of UK mobile phones brought in and given as "presents" to Turkish waiters

Just beware of costs. I am with O2 and think they are very good network in terms of value for money. But texts are expensive I think I was getting charged 50p to send and receive.

Yes, you're right Steve, o2 texts from Turkey to the UK are about 50p each, but you don't get charged on received texts.

Be careful too, as sometimes you get a message to say "message failed" when infact the mesage has gone, so it pays to hang on a bit before re-sending and spending £3 before you know it!

Also be warned that if you are texting a Turkish mobile from an English mobile while you're in Icmeler it isn't any cheaper!

Very sensible to use a Turkish SIM if you're staying any longer than a fortnight I'd say!

If your on a contract, like the one i'm on with o2, i get 1000 free texts per month, when i'm in Turkey they don't charge for sending texts its taken off your allowance, but they take off 4 texts per 1 sent from over there.

I am with O2 and have the sim in which you put in £10 and get 300 free texts (which also include picture messages). I have found out over the last few years when on holiday if I send a picture message I don't get charged - bonus as you can also make friends and family at home jealous of the lovely pictures you send also you can get more text onto a picture message than a normal text.

So I just bombard people with lovely picture messages instead of postcards now :)

Right here goes.
Your uk mobiles will work fine in Turkey..yes you may be charged extra for texts/Ringing but will all work fine!!

Now
My original post was purely for Information regarding my mobile. As i am going for longer (6months)..i was enquiring about getting a Turkish Sim card as this will be cheaper for me.So i was just wondering what was my best option ie do i buy a cheap phone out there or just use turkish sim in mine.

Hope this has cleared things up....
