So far Steve to me the canal area is now an eyesore. :x
It needs the shops back to again retain the quaintness of this area.

Just returned and there is nothing there at all, looks bare and very odd, everyone in the resort complaining the canal has lost its appeal and bars like Venice are upset and suffering as a result. Rumours over there were that if the current mayor is re-elected he will bring them back but maybe not until next year. Having visited many times over the years I am concerned that Icmeler is in danger of becoming like any other resort, the canal being a case in point, add to this the increase in Russians and All-Inclusives (fewer people out and about in the restaurants) and that unique special appeal that has brought us back year after year is diminishing. Of course we will be back but I am concerned, interested in other views?

The stalls were removed by the courts, the mayor if he is to do that will need to go to court and overturn the original ruling. Is it election time already, Zeki was relected in March 2009 so I think the next elections are 2013.

The Canal area is very unappealing now, i used to go down there every night but we only walked down there twice last week as there was nothing to look at

Have to say BIG ERROR has been made on the canal area. Its a utter disgrace. Not even been cleaned up or painted.

If anyone can get the ruling overturned the mayor can, so come on Mr Mayor show us your listening and at least clean it up.

Maybe Rami can give us an update from his next council meeting if someone asks him nicely ?

I must admit I had serious reservations when I first heard the stalls were being removed from the canal area, as I think that is why a lot of people enjoyed a wander up and down there, especially of an evening. However, I thought maybe it wouldn't be too bad if they were being replaced with something else - but to take them away and do absolutely nothing with the area left behind is just wrong. The canal is such a pretty part of the resort and should really be a focal point where people can stroll and enjoy it. Hope something does get done to improve the situation. It's also a shame for the bar and restaurant owners in that area, as their business is bound to be suffering because there won't be as much passing trade.

In the past we've always headed to the canal area in the evening. This year we're intending to head towards the old village instead, as for us the canal area is now not as appealing as before. Looking on the bright side we haven't been to any restaurants in the old village before, so we'll probably find new places to add to our list of favourites. :)

Such a shame to hear the area has not been cleared up and made to look pretty. It was a lovely place to have a stroll in the evening or afternoon and pop into one of the local bars for a refreshment.

ten of my fam ily just returned they have been many many times always a week in may then we join them all for a big family holiday 2 weeks in july. They still had a good week but all agree that little bit a magic is missing the canal area is an eyesaw. the promanade is nice but has lost its uniqueness that made it stand out from other resorts. But its saving grace is the people and the welcome you always get.. lets get the campaign started bring the canal area back to life..Anne Consett..

I totally agree with everyone. When I posted regarding this earlier this year saying that I would miss sitting by the canal and the stalls etc I was told by certain members that I could still do that as nothing was stopping me. Now as you say the canal is a mess how could anyone even want to sit there. It was such a focal point of Icmeler. Usually when changes are made they are usually to the good but in this case - a bad decision. I reiterate what I said before that it was a nice place to go to after a meal and have a stroll down the canal talking the stall holders. I am glad that others that have been there now can say how awful it is without the stalls and atmosphere around the canal area.

Just back this morning after 2 weeks and the canal area has lost its sparkle. It did look a bit run down which is a shame as the rest of the resort eg the front looks great and soo much cleaner

The restaurants are also suffering I would say. Walked past many nights about 11pm and you could still get a seat in Venice, which is unheard of. Dreamboys only had about 8 tables occupied the other night, so folks must be going elswhere

I agree with what people are saying about the Canal area. Something needs to be done to bring back life to that part of the resort. I missed spending time at the stall and the banter that went along with it. Some of the stall holders have moved into shops and can be found if you look around.

Totally agree - the canal area is now a complete eyesore! It makes Icmeler look dirty and unappealing.

It was always a nice stroll along the canal looking at all the stalls and absorbing the atmosphere, especially in the evenings. It is a big mistake to remove this 'charm'!

Hope this isn't the case :(
We have spent the last couple of years convincing our friends who said they would never set foot in Turkey as they though it would be "dirty and unappealing" to come with us to icmeler this year.
May have to steer clear of the canal area, however it was always one of our favourite areas to visit on the evening.

Hi
We were in Icmeler mid April and had brilliant weather, but I must admit I was very disappointed with the canal area and hoped it was just because it was very early season and something was planned to replace the stalls. After reading the latest reviews that does not seem to be the case. Very sad as I loved the atmosphere on a night time when it was all lit.
