Coming tomorrow but PANIC over currency... Help!!!

Postby sarahxxx » 06 Jun 2010 13:03

I have new Turkish lira notes which I have just discovered are no longer in use ! Do I throw them out ? Or can I still use them??? Seems this is a recent thing and others may encounter the same concern I suspect ... Also what's weather like locally ? Thanks in advance xx

Hi i assume you meant old Lira notes. The new ones are smaller.

As far as I know its some old ones that are/ were being withdrawn, but can still be used till a certain cut off date.

I've got 90 lira from last year and still planning on taking them over in July.

If you bought the lira recently then they should be ok as the shop selling them wouldnt be selling notes you couldnt use.

I wouldnt worry about it, and theres plenty of banks in Turkey to swap it to current notes if its really that old. also if you have time depending on your flight, you could go to a UK shop e.g. Post office to swap it to new notes.

If the notes you have show Lira in Millions they expired 31/12/2005

If the notes you have say the word Yeni on them they expired as legal tender on the 31st December 2009.

Yeni Turkish Lira notes can now only be changed at two banks they may be exchanged for the current notes only at Turkish Central Bank (TC Merkez Bankasi) offices or, in the absence of a Central Bank office, at a TC Ziraat Bankasi office, until December 31, 2016.

I do not know is either of the above have branches in Icmeler or Marmaris.

I was speaking to one man last week who said he'd been told he would have to take them to one particular bank in Marmaris to exchange them.
