First time info

Postby Petebog » 08 Sep 2009 18:34

Hi All

First visit to Turkey. Travelling to Icmeler with better half for a week on the 18th of September, staying at the Golmar Beach. Both in our early fifties. I am sure these questions have been asked and answered numerous times already on the forum, but I would appreciate any help.
What is the weather likely to be?
Will we need cardies etc. at night?
Will we need aircon at this time of year?
Who and how much should we tip, or is it similar to Spanish seaside type holidays?
Any advice about how to haggle, and who to haggle with, for example if we visit ICR to book trips, do we haggle with them?
Wife likes browsing in shops etc. from what I have read you don’t get much peace to do this, any advice?
Any help or other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pete, we'll be at same hotel as you from 21st Sept, have been there many times but not this late in the season so can't really answer your questions. If you have any questions about the hotel, feel free to PM me.

The weather is usually lovely at that time of year during the day and evenings are okay too, you may need a cardie some evenings but its definitely not cold. You may get an occassional thunderstorm, which soon clear and are very spectacular to watch.

I have never used aircon late Sept or early October.

I wont compare it to a Spanish seaside holiday as the people are no comparison, the Turkish people are the nicest race I have ever met in my life and they cant do enough for you, they will go out of their way to make your holiday the happiest ever. I generally tip at restaurants after a meal around 10% but its purely up to you how much. I dont usually tip when I just go to a bar for one drink, but if i have an evening there I would leave a couple of lira as a tip.

As for haggling, have a price set in your mind that you are willing to pay and dont go over from that. As a rule, I generally offer half the asking price then am prepared to go up to about 70%. If you are not prepared to pay what they are asking and you just walk away with a polite no thanks, they will call you back if they are willing to let it go for the price you offered.

Browsing in shops depends on where you go, Marmaris Bazaar is the place you definitely wont get any peace to browse, but in Icmeler, it is getting better and you can have a look around. Just tell them you just want to look if they approach you. Just be polite at all times and you receive the same respect back.

Haggling with ICR........... you can try, but I am sure Donna will win in the end and you will probably have to buy her a couple of vodka's for the laughs you will receive. Have a pop into their office when you get there and have a chat with Donna on the trips on offer.

Above all, have a fantastic holiday and I am sure you will be returning to Icmeler in the very near future.

First time in Icmeler

Postby mikendeb » 10 Sep 2009 16:58

Looking forward to our first holiday in Icmeler.
Flying out of Manchester on 28 September with British Midland for 12 nights.
I guess it will be starting to cool down a little by then.
We are staying in the Rhodes apartments on the recommendation of a friend.
We went to Turkey (Altinkum) 2 years ago and loved it but it was very very hot. That was first 2 weeks in Sept.

I am planning on having a Turkish bath/massage on the first day.
We are reading all the posts here trying to suss out the best bars and restaurants before we go.
Cant wait now - I love Turkey.
Any suggestions of places to go /eat are welcome,
regards to all,
Michael and Debbie.
