Virgins

Now that your attention has been caught perhaps someone could help.

Booked for two weks in icmeler for July 2010 and this is the first time we have been to Turkey (hence the virgin bit!!!)

Heard loads of people saying how nice it is etc so thought we would take the plunge. My sister also liked the sound of Turkey and booked to go this year and this there at the moment. I dont know where abouts she is but I know its not Icmeler.

First day of her holiday their room was broken into and money and passports taken from the safe...........is this normal? according to her travel agent this thing does go on alot in Turkey.

So as you can imagine the mrs is now worried!!!!!!!!!!

Also I had another thought (yes I know unusal for a man) but this will be the first countey I have been to when I dont know ANY of the language.

Any looking forward to your comments re the security etc

Welcome to the forum and I hope you have a great holiday in Turkey next year.

Not knowing where your Sister is I cant really comment on whether it is a usual thing to happen or not, but in Icmeler its very rarely that you hear of anything like this going on. If anything, I find the Turkish so honest and trustworthy. The only trouble I ever did have in Icmeler was one of the cleaners did steal a pair of my cropped trousers, only cheap trousers, but nonetheless, I would have willingly have given them to her if she had asked

Dont worry about not speaking any of the language, the locals are all very good English speaking, but have a look around google for some translation sites, there are some good ones about that let you listen to the pronunciation as well.

We have only been going for 4 years and I have picked up quite a lot of the language, the Turks love it when you try and speak Turkish.

Tell your Wife not to worry about Icmeler, its definitely the nicest, safest and cleanest place I have ever been to.

hi welcome to the forum...i am sure you will both love Icmeler as much as everyone on this forum does.. we have been going for a few years now and have had no problems of any kind...we were concerned at first as like yourselves we had never been any where like this before, and i would say the first time was a bit of a culture shock, and we did think oh my god what have we done, whilst en route to Icmeler, but once we got to the top of the hill and started the decline into Marmaris, we were smitten. The people in the resort both Turkish and Kurdish are lovely, very accomodating and will do anything to help. You will pick up a few sayings and i would agree with previous comments that they do appreciate this. I can honestly say that the restaurants and bars in the resort are the cleanest of any of the countries i have visited, our country could take a few tips from them!

have a lovely time when it comes jacqui :D :D :D

Well you have picked a great place to holiday next year and am sure once you've been you'll be hooked like the rest of us :)

Security all I'd say is make sure you do lock you room door at night, last year there were a few rooms broken into (well the doors weren't locked so they walked in) and few bits were stolen. This was the first time I had ever heard or seen this here in all the times I have been there. Just use common sense with things like locking your door, using the safes etc, and I'm sure all will be great.

The people are the friendliest and most helpful people you'll meet nothing is too much trouble.

I really wouldn't worry, I've been travelling to Icmeler for many years now without any problems at all.

I would advise - and not just in Icmeler, but wherever you stay in the world, to hire a safe box and keep your money/passport/valuables etc locked up there. In Icmeler the charge is generally £10 per week so not much at all.

hiya
welcome to the forum
if you pick a trusted hotel and read some of the reviews on it
you will get trouble anywhere cause thats life and no one can stop the occasional thing happening anywhere in the world
but if you get a safety deposit box and keep everything valuable in there you should be ok

Thanks folks, we always have a safe/security box but it was a bit concerning that the safe in my sisters room was opened for the things to be stolen suppose thats life.

we are booked into the Babadan Appartments which appear to have good reviews suppose we will find out when we get there. Personally as long as it is clean then its fine by me but the kids might have different requirements namely the pools & beach!!!!!!!

Always felt really safe in Icmeler - well, as safe as anywhere I'd guess. It's like anywhere - some people are good, some people are bad. Want to meet rip-off merchants, try Marmaris market  Just keep your wallet shut.

To put it really into perspective though, Ibiza is an absolute hotspot for robberies and crime. Not just San An - the family resorts are as bad, some hotel complexes are targetted again and again by gangs of trained children. Hire a villa - then it's very common for these to be burgled.
Want to get worse - Rhodes isn't very safe for crimes on the person. The resort of Faliraki is particularly unsafe, do not even think of going on the beach there after dark, and it isn't from boozed up brits, it's locals.

Disorientated and over-relaxed tourists will attract the bad guys if they are so inclined, in whichever country they may be. Certainly wouldn't say Turkey was any worse than anywhere else, if anything, you know you get sometimes a "gut feeling" about something - well I feel Icmeler is safer than many resorts, but of course, not totally crime free.

Deffo not something which should ever put anyone off.
