Cost of living

Postby tequilaqueen66 » 23 Jun 2006 12:16

Hi all. I am new to this very informative site. I have been to Turkey in the past ( Kusadasi and Icmeler ) Icmeler was by far my favourite place! Although in the 12 years since I was there, I doubt I will recognise much now! We are going over in the first 2 weeks of September. My hubby and mum in law are Turkey "virgins" so I really want to make it the best holiday ever for them! We are self catering and although we will be eating out most of the time, I was wondering if anyone could give a rough cost for every day essentials, and also which is the best supermarket. Going to book excursions etc in resort and travel via the dolmus. I am really excited about coming back.....Turks are among the most friendly people I have ever met, and the history, culture and scenery are amazing! Anyone out there in Sept.....if you see a redhead looking like a boiled lobster come and say hi
Any info gratefully received and thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Lisa

Posted this a couple of weeks ago,

these are the prices I was paying at the market under the ICR offices
When we were there we were getting 284 to the £

Sliced bread for toasting...................2lira
cobs are a lot cheaper
1litre semi skimmed milk..................2lira
5 litre bottled water..........................2lira
Chicken breast meal.........................14lira
steak meal.......................................18lira
breakfasts from................................2.5lira
cup of coffee....................................2.5lira
large EFES.....anything from 60pence a pint 2-4lira
short and mixer................................8lira
Coke......................................2-4lira

just a rough guide you could pay more or less depends where you shop and eat,Tansas is a lot cheaper.
We always take with us sugar, coffee, tea, breakfast cereals for the kids, butter, bicuits for a fuddle on the balcony at night, jam,a couple of spreads, cheese, chocolate again for midnight feasting after a few beers.
the list is endless, depends if you want to eat any meals in the apartment.

To make room for this the wife leaves behind her frocks and blouses but I allow her to use mine.

Have a lovely time.

Watch your bills.

iv been going for 10 years.and it has changed, and its still great,i reckon in the next 15 years it will be like marmaris but who cares, the place and the people are great, turunc is wat icmeler was 10 or twelve years ago.i always have a couple of days in turunc, but icmeler calls back because thats where all my turkish mates are,my friends kiss me and my wife when we get there, and cry when we go home.and they text every week.thats what makes turkish people great.and i reckon gene is spot on with the prices.its cheap if you look about.going 18 september  i would have gone 1st september, but i went along with everybody else whos going wat a mug :evil:still il enjoy it il be smashed on effes with me turkish mates :D

Thanks Skilly and Stevo3 for your thoughts. Will keep an eye out for a fellow lobster while we are there!! Got a good feeling about this holiday. Can't wait to sit in the park again at night....there was an old guy worked in the shop/cafe bit years ago........he tried to teach me Turkish whilst we sipped endless cups of coffee and chatted. I always felt safe even in the early hours of the morning. My best memory is wandering into the old village early one morning with the waft of freshly baked bread surrounding me! Best bread ever. Sipping tea in a courtyard somewhere playing backgammon with a very old man communicating via hand signals! Fantastic!!!
Cheers all.
Lisa.
