Bad news for anyone who takes their Nationwide debit abroad. At the moment it is free to use your card abroad and the exchange rate is normally better. However from 6 May, Nationwide will now be charging customers, the same as other banks and building societies do.

Looks like I will be cancelling my Nationwide account then

Have just been on there site it gives the countrys and there is no fee charged for turkey

Looks like anywhere in Europe incl Turkey will still be free so no change there. Everywhere that is to be charged it will be 1%, that's still way better than the other banks most of whom charge 2.75%

it still work out that you save money , better exchange rate than anyone can offer in resort ,save by not having to pay for a safe.last august the money i spent over a 3 week period i had extra £100 approx with nationwide exchange rate .

its good but i would rather have cash in the safe, over the last few years ive seen many a sad face in the square where cash cards had been swallowed by the machines.

Me Too. I could not contemplate going on holiday and relying on bits of plastic. I have also seen couples devastated because they relied on cards only and for one reason or another it all went wrong. A mixture is , to us, the only way to do holiday cash. Some cash, some travellers checks and back up with cash cards if needed. We use travellers checks because we got mugged many years ago in Spain so so strictly cash is not for us.
It is a case of whatever you think is right for you.

I agree with you Tinkerbelle, take a mixture and you can't go wrong. I just couldn't depend on plastic to see me through my holiday, I certainly have it with me as a backup if I need it, but take some cash and mostly travellers cheques for peace of mind.

good news had terms conditions today from nationwide turkey is fee free cash withdrawls its only payable in certain countries .
