no more duty free fags for us!!!!

Postby chris jo and cory » 20 Jan 2009 07:39

ok...............after being a nicotine addict for more years than i like to think about........im taking the plunge and trying to quit the filthy habit once and for all.
no patches.............no funny looking plastic substitutes...........just a will to stop for my son................what better incentive eh!

was mortified yesterday when one of the girls at his nursery askd me if i smoked in the car whilst taking him to nursery............rather miffed..i asked why she thought that.............she replied they could smell smoke on him when i dropped him off!!!!!!!!
oh shame..............i felt as small as the smallest thing in small land!
i never allow my boy to be in the company of anyone whos smoking.......we sit in the garden at home shivering to satisfy our need for the weed.............yes..i do smoke in the car............heavily at times.........but never with my boy in at the same time............but i still feel wreched that because of my habit my georeous lad goes to nursery smelling like an ashtray!
i can only guess that hes picking up the smell whilst traveling in my car.in fact i asked the none smoking girl i give a lift too if she had noticed it too...........embarrased....she admited she did smell of smoke after a lift with me!
so thats it!
the car is going for a full valet this morning.......the fags are in the bin..............the battle against the weed has begun.
wish me luck folks..............hopefully ill be able to walk straigt past the duty frees at dalaman in sept!

Oh how embarrassing for you. I know myself when in the car with my OH I smell of smoke when I get to work but no one has ever said anything. Luckily enough I've never smoked. All it takes is something like this to spur you into action, good luck on being smoke free!

Good luck with packing in the smoking. I did it myself when the smoking ban came in, no patches, just pure will power, same as you, and have never looked back. Smoked nearly 30 years but do not miss them and now hate the smell. Infact I hate walking into bars now as the outside of the bar always smells disgusting and half the time you get a lung full of other people's smoke. I also understand about the smell lingering on things/objects - our friends dropped xmas pressies off for the kids and as soon as we took them out of the bag we could smell stale smoke on the wrapping paper.

Good luck - John

I wish you all the luck in the world. This advert with the little girl being frightened in case her mum dies is beginning to sink in. As a smoker I would love to pack in and for the first time i am thinking it's gone on long enough, time to stop. I wonder does the same thing happen to my grandaughter I guess it does. Yuk.

Best wished for a smoke free future.

Good luck with giving up, you can do it!!

I gave up 23 days ago but I'm using Zyban prescribed from the doctors and I've not had any side effects and they have taken the cravings away completely!!

There are lots of things now that you can use as an aid to give up smoking, but this lady at the nursery has given you the biggest aid you will ever have.

Good luck to you.......put the money you save into your Icmeler fund.

Good Luck to anyone trying to give up, until about fifteen plus years ago I used to smoke. My children asked me to stop. I decided not to Buy or Borrow cigarettes, if I havent got them I can`t smoke them. that is the only tip I can give. In all honesty I don`t think I could afford to start again now.

We've been smokefree for 4 years 2 months now, and don't miss them at all, infact the thought of them makes me gag now let alone the smell of them :?

If you're trying to stop and you get a real bad craving, have one, it's not the end of the world if you do, just don't have anymore that day.

It worked for us, I think if you completely cut them out and say you're never going to have another one it can be too much pressure and makes you want them even more. If you have a real craving have one - nick one off someone, but just DON'T buy any or you'll feel like you have to finish the box. You'll find it hard but just keep at it, if you have a bad day it's ok, just start again.

Also don't tell everyone you're giving up, that just puts you under even more pressure, just see if they notice you're not smoking then say you are but you don't want to make a big deal of it. Half/most of it is breaking the habit of the times/situations you'd have a ciggie so try and change that if you can.

You'll know when you've beaten it when you smell the awful stench of someone whoes just had a cig, repulsive !!! :?

Good Luck - you CAN do it !!!!

Good luck on the stopping smoking, not the easiest thing in the world to do, but when you have motivation like what happened today, then it will make it that little bit easier for you. When you are craving for a smoke, which you will do in the beginning, just remember how you felt today when you were asked about smoking in the car, that should be enough to make the craving go away.

Well done on making the decision and good luck.

well...............first night at work over and no ciggie breaks............close to cracking a couple of times but resisted..........the wife has booked in with the stop smoking clinic for early next week as she dosnt think she can do it alone!
a couple of my workmates have also decided to try stopping with me.........so may make things easier.........we can all sit in the canteen growling at people together........lol
was talking to a guy who stopped 5 years ago..........he says he still has the odd urge to light up.......how wierd is that?

I think once you smoke, you will always get that occasional urge, but hey, well done for resisting on the few occassions that have arisen. When I gave up last year for 3 months, I used to make sure I was doing something with my hands when I had a craving, keep them wet. Your wife will love you washing up all the dishes for her

I think you are being really brave and I admire that you have got the courage to do this cold turkey, with such a fantastic reason in mind.
It's so often something so unexpected which can be the straw that breaks the camels back and I really hope that you are successful in your mission to break free from the cancer sticks.
Once you're free from smoking, I'm sure you will notice the most enormous differences in your life!
And think of all the money you can save to spend on lovely, pretty & tasty things in duty free instead!!
