im off to icmeler on monday for a week.

im worrying now as i dont cope well with being ill..it will be like im dying!lol

if it's a bug and the locals have had it, it's only natural it will be passed through everyone i guess.

hope everyone is feeling better soon

Laura, I would feel the same as you, Hubby says I get a dodgy tummy going to the end of the garden path to put the wheelie bin out  If i was going in the next few days would pack the imodium (99p for 6 in Asda and the rehydration sachets too to replace salts and minerals). At least if you do end up with a bug you will be prepared and saving a lot of money on tablets rather than getting them from pharmacy in Icmeler. :(

instead of imodium, use what the locals use, just ask in the chemist.....it will get much better results....

maybe drink some actimel or something to try and strengthen your immune system before you go

and remember to always wash your hands, or use the gel,

dehydration sachets are a good idea to take , but, if all else fails, flat coke ( not diet) is better than nothing for settling the stomach and replacing lost salts/sugars

Just back, heard about one hotel hit with a bug,no problems myself, ate in about 10-12 different places, brushed teeth with tap water, and had ice in drinks.

is that the Oregano Water?
our youngest had a stomach ache on a boat trip and they gave her some -foul smelling stuff, but it did the trick in a jiffy - smelt and tasted worse than angastura [sp] bitters
I was told they make it in the villages and it can be bought locally

fanny, i have no idea, just whatever the chemist person gives you, i just think its maybe the turkey equiverlant of immodium, :D

I was in Icmeler the last 2 weeks of August and both me and my mum got this stomach bug, my mum had it the last couple of days of our holiday and i had it as soon as i got home, it took me about 1 week to shake it off. My auntie was in Icmeler the 1st 2 weeks of September and her and both of her friends all got it while they were there. It seems like an awful lot of people have had it.

hi everyone ive just read your posts and thought id share this with you we were in icmeler from 21 aug until 5 sept i picked up campylobacter in turkey and am only well enough to go back to work this wednesday 15 oct i have been off work nearly 6 weeks so i hope you all recover sooner than me

13 Oct 2008 16:48

 OMG!!! karen hope you are feeling much better ...what causes this awful bug? i have been there twice this year and escaped it !!!

I've just googled campylobacter out of interest and it seems it's caused by undercooked poultry in the main though it can also affect water supplies

don't want to start mass panic, but it seems it's the biggest cause of food poisoning in UK - and a notifiable illness!

sounds like what me and OH had after returning from Icmeler last year - fortunately we didn't have the sickness side of things though .... the stomach cramps were more than enough to contend with

Interesting as i thought maybe it could have been something to do with red meat as i only eat chicken and fish !!!! and i drink gallons of water (bottled of course) ...but all a bit scary sounds very painfull.

Thanx for the info fanny

Pauline - the pains are horrendous, but fortunately i was only affected from the stomach down
me being sick is a family affair - I need plenty of folk round me to tell me to be brave and at least 4 people to hold each hand and mop my brow !
oh and another 4 to rub my back!!!

Tummy Bug

We were in Icmeler at the end of August. 2-days before returning home my wife developed diarrhoea/nausea. On the day we departed her condition worsened. At Dalaman airport she collapsed and was treated in the ER at the airport, she was put on a saline drip and thankfully was allowed to fly. Both her and I had the runs for exactly 2 weeks following which my wife developed labyrinthitis as a consequence.

The funny (now that is!) part of this story occured at the airport when my wife collapsed. As she was being wheelchaired to the ER, the attendant nurse was taking her pulse whilst simultaneously saying to me "dis treatment weel be one hunder and seventy five turkish lira... you pay now....."!!!!

We were in Icmeler the middle of September and I caught a terrible bug the day before we came home the stomach cramps were terrible

My parents and their two friends have just returned from icmeler a week ago and three of them have suffered with this stomach bug. The couple they travlled with started suffering on saturday night within 24 hours of getting home and just had sicknes and diarrhoea, but my Mum has also suffered from it and was hospitalised.
She was fine until monday night when she went to a business dinner. Within ten minutes of being there she said she felt sick and went to go to the toilet and the next thing she knew was waking up with an oxygen mask on her face on the way to hospital in an ambulance covered in vomit! She doesnt drink so hadn't been drunk either. She continued to be sick for 2 days after and the doctors think its gastroenteritis likely to have been picked up whilst away or on the plane on the way home.

When they were there they spoke to some other friends who were staying all inclusive and they said an ambulance was there nearly every night taking someone to hospital with these symptoms! Wont name the hotel though.

As for the wooden plank steak thing, its common belief that wood is harder to clean and retains more bacteria but research has shown that bacteria tends to die or subside within three minutes of touching the wood whereas bacteria thrives on plastic surfaces. Also as plastic is a softer material its more exposed to cuts and grooves which retain the bacteria better and helps it thrive! Science lesson over!

My husband had a tummy bug on the last day of our holidays and I was OK. We had both eaten the same food so I don't know why he was poorly and I wasn't.
Has anybody got any tips on preparing before we go next year to prevent this happening, such as pro biotic yoghurts or vitamins.
