I was lucky enough to of been in the Air Cadets as a kid up untill late teens, so I was given free flying lessons, so I actually enjoy it, and I know what most of the noises are. Also my parents made sure we had at least one foreign holiday a year as kids.

Just remember it's the safest form of transport.

Flying is really boring - honestly.

First time I flew was for our honeymoon, I was fine I didn't worry at all about flying - the wedding planning took up all my worrying time  I was ok up until I found out I wasn't sat right next to hubby (he'd asked for isle seats so we could get up and down for the loo without disturbing anyone) so I panicked a bit but once on the plane I was fine, we held hands across the isle and he explained what was happening and I was fine then.

The only interesting parts are take off and landing - I know you're scared of heights but I'd really recommend you look out the window and watch as it can be really disorientating not looking and feeling yourself going up and not seeing what's going on outside.

Once you're up and levelled out it's just like being on a coach - hence it being boring.

Then the landing is interesting - brilliant seeing all the houses and sights etc below then touching down can SOMETIMES be a bit rocky but if I remember rightly from our first time to Dalaman last year it was a great landing and take off, very smooth.

I'd really recommend sucking on boiled sweets for take off and landing, keep swallowing and it helps your ears pop back to normal.

Also try and get up a few times to the loo or moving your feet just in case you swell up - I used to but I try and drink plenty of water before we go and during the flight and keep getting up for the loo and I don't swell up hardly anymore.

DON'T WORRY - you're safer in a plane than you are in a car/bus/coach - you'll love it !!!

Post flight nerves

I'm another nervous flyer.... ever since I had the children, and for 12 years I wouldnt get on a plane.

I'm better now, after getting tablets from my GP, although I still don't enjoy it, but its the only way to get anywhere!!! I know its the safest form of travel, but get really panicky if there's any turbulance.....Oh yes and why does the turbulance start just after they serve the meals??

3 years ago was the first time i'd been on a plane for about 10 years and I was petrified. I managed it but my girlfriend said she wouldnt get on a plane with me again after because i was that bad ! Every little bump or movement and id be swearing and going into a kind of convulsion.

But having been twice a year for the last 3 years, ive definately got better, last year we had quite a bit of turbulence and i was quite bad, but earlier this year I downloaded the fear of flying dvd and it explains a lot about the plane and how it works and the different noises you hear, it also explains turbulence and what it is.

This year I was fine even though the return flight was quite bad ! The pilot said as we were taking off from Dalaman, that the flight over was smooth and it should be the same on the way back.....but as soon as we were in the air there was constant turbulence, which didnt bother me, now that I had the knowledge of what it was, then he said we would be flying through a thunderstorm and the turbulence would get worse, and although it made me a bit nervous, overall I was fine.

I read somewhere that statistically you would have to fly once a day for 21'000 years before you were involved in any accident.
This is the link to the dvd, you can order it or buy it as a download which is what I did. Id highly recommend it if your nervous.

Wayne's reply answers my fear. I always wondered why the engine noise changed not long after take off. Thats the worse bit I think. Now I know I can sit back and relax. :D

Thanks Wayne

Flying

25 May 2008 18:47

Not bothered about the mechanical side of things or the plane having a mishap but am really claustrophobic! I have to have an aisle seat so I can stick my head out this helps but tend to get battered by hostesses and trollies :D I will turn up in Icmeler with 2 black eyes but couldn't care less as long as my head can stick out down the aisle :D

Hi All,
Always remember to sit at the back if you can because they never back into anything, but on a more serious note it is still statistically the safest way to travel you are more likely to have a road traffic accident.
So think about all those poor people on the roads when you fly over them.

That is the CD that I have.

It really helped me overcome my fear, as I was seeming to get worse with each flight I was taking instead of getting better.

If anyone wants any info on the CD pm me.
