I'm off to Icmeler in July, this will be my first time in Turkey, I am very excited but totally confused by the whole which currency to take thing! I have read that they do like sterling over there, does that mean in a restaurant they give you a bill in stirling or is it in lira and i would need to convert it to give them money in sterling
also at the market do they barter in sterling or lira. I am completely confused :?

In a restaurant you will normally get a bill in Turkish however if you want to pay in sterling you can. I would advise bringing over sterling and then changing it to lira if you need it. The exchange rate is generally better here than in the UK. However maybe change up a small amount before you come for bits and bobs you may need when you first arrive. Alot of the prices on the market are in sterling so its worth keeping some for then. Hope this helps!

Hi Laura

you will normally get your bill in YTL but if you ask they will convert it to £ for you. At the market you will get a better deal if you use £
There are lots of places to change your £ into YTL dont use the change shops as some of them will charge you a commission use they small supermarkets or the bars and restaurants you will get a better exchange rate

Change a small amount of £ here so you have some YTL to begin with the best way we have found is to take a small amount of £ and sterling travellers cheques or use the ATM's the HSBC one gives you £ but watch the bank charges depending on who you bank with

Hope this helps
