Dodgy Translations

Hi All,

I've just replied to a post about Turkish chat and it got me thinking about the first time that you try out new language.

I remember falling over a tramp in Barcelona when I was studying there and turning to my friends said

"Dios mio estoy tan embarazada"

I thought I was saying

"My God I'm so embarrassed"

but actually said

"My God, I;m so pregnant"


One problem I have had in Turkish is the word Sikildim which should be without the i's dotted and means 'I'm bored/fed up' however with the i's dotted and with the wrong pronunciation it means something quite different!!!!


Anybody else had any funny mishaps?

Perhaps you trying Turkish or maybe you've hear some Turks saying funny things???

I bought Spanish linguaphone many years ago, and got quite good at what was on the tape. I decided to use it to ask directions one day, I said to one guy, "Donde estamos port aventura por favor", where is Port Aventure please?.............he replied and then my Husband asked what he had said, I had to be honest and tell him I didnt have a clue, it was not part of my linguaphone

Better luck at Turkish.

PS what does your word mean with the i's dotted?.........very inquisitive now.

LOL......oh yes, I recognise the SIK bit now.

Thats the confusing thing with Turkish, so many different endings.

haha i fell for this word too, i blurted it out being impressed that i had rememberd it until a friend almost slaped me and told me never to say it in future haha whoops!

there was another time when my husband told me

"sana hastayim" I understood this as I'm sick of you but think (and hope) that it actually means I'm sick for you... If it doesn't he's in trouble!!!

my freind and i started spanish classes in september only done one class could not get the hang of it all my freind kept saying was what was that i cant get that we just kept laughin could not stop think teature was glad we left lol lol how do you all pick it up so easy lynn

I tend to remember the sentences rather than what each individual word means, but I am trying a little harder lately. Not easy though.

I'm the same as you Mary, I would rather learn a full phrase, it gets too complicated for me with all the different endings with verbs
