Sunbed Sir

If you want a sunbed and brolly on the edge of the sea you must arrive down on the beach as early as possible.

It was the first morning of our August fortnight in Icmeler.
After a light breakfast in our apartment of coffee,toast and cereals,we packed the bags ready for our "First Day At The Beach".

Now the bags we take to the beach are Huge, having to hold 6 towels,
2 each, various grades of sun oil ranging from 2 for me to total block for Mrs Genes nose, snorkel and mask for Andre, lilo for the Rhino to play in the sea with and the obligatory reading books for Ann.
We also take two x two litre bottles of water that I have frozen in the fridge overnight, and these will keep iced all day if kept out of the sun.

Last visit to the toilet then we are on our way yours truly laiden up like an human pack horse.

We have decided to spend our first day on the stretch of beach in front of the Kontes Hotel,so having walked past the Prince Apartments on our right, sauntered passed the Efendi Hotel also on the right with the Etoil Hotel on the left, we arrived on the Promenade.

A voice shouts "Sunbed Sir", and an arm with open palm is thrust in my direction which I grasp and shake vigoriously.

"How much for the beds" I enquire.
"A £1 sir" is the reply.
"Can I have one near the waters edge " I ask.
"I have saved these just for you" he says as he escorts us to three beds and a brolly right on the waters edge.

How do they do that?
How did he know I that I was coming on that day?

He wiped the beds for us, gave us one of those cute little pots to put our rubbish in and told us if we needed anything to give him a call and that he was there to make our holiday a memorable one.

We exchanged names and I offered to pay for the beds.

"You pay later " he says.

Another friendship has been forged.

We used the sunbeds at CoCo beach and were looked after by a guy called Messe who had a fanatastic memory, he asked your name on meeting you and he could remember everybody's name on his stretch of the beach for the rest of the fortnight. He also didnt take any money for sunbeds, drinks and food until we were ready to leave. It will be interesting to see if he still remembers our names next year.

Hi Gene
Talk about personal service! Nobody does it better than the Turkish (or Kurdish) people.
We've never been 'beach ' people ourselves, preferring to stay round the pool or trips out, but reading this thread has got me thinking we might try it next time.
And don't worry about posting stuff from the archives, it's always great to go on the forum and see someone has something to say.

Ooooh Jayne I can just hear Ibrahim on Yakamoz beach shouting - Sundbeds... ice-cream... sunshine.... bling bling!!

They all work so hard to make everyone happy, nothing is too much trouble - and in that heat it must be killing!

We even had our feet and flip flops washed off on leaving the beach by one of the young boys, not sure where he was actually from, but we used to tip him with 1 lira and he'd beam the biggest smile in thanks and leg it right up the bazaar as fast as he could! He was lovely.

Aaaahhh the memories... to wind back the clock right now would be fantastic!

Awww, just reading this has made me smile.

I cant say I was smiling this morning at 05:20am as I was scraping the ice from my car windscreen to come to work, but at least I can think of the money I am earning towards next years 2 or 3 holidays in Icmeler.

I wont wish my life away, but I am sure we will all soon be back on the Turkish beaches and smiling once again.

Sat here in sunny but cold Manchester Icmeler seems so long ago (only a couple of months) but had to laugh at tales of beach boys and how they remember your name I always go to Denis Kapisi beach and in Sept on first morning went down with my towels, lilo and books and even though they didnt know we had arrived 'my' bed was waiting for me. I do miss that little jetty they used to have though i always had a bed saved for me on there. Only about 7 months till we go back
