Fist timer holiday review

Postby andiescottie » 10 Sep 2007 18:58

Hi folks!

Well I suppose that it is about time that I bored you all to tears with the details of my week in icmeler.
We were booked, my boyfriend and I, to fly from manchester to dalaman on 21st august at 2030. When we checked in (including my amazingly under weight bag!) we discovered that our flight had been delayed an hour. No major deal but when we arrived at the gate ready for departure we found that 2 previous flights from manc to dalaman had been delayed and we were all attemting to leave at the same time. Due to this the flight time was a little longer than planed. We arrived in dalaman at 0315. As I am disabled wheelchair assisstance had been booked to help me avoid a slow hike through the airport. The chair took 20mins to turn up after everyone else had departed from the plane. Once in the chair I felt a burning sensation on the outside of both legs. This turned out to be friction caused by a bendy wheeled chair. So I had to get out to avoid burns. the attendant then left us to our own devices. Hobbled up to the visa area to find at least 3000+ holdaymakers waiting to get through. My boyfriend went though the visa area with both passports whilst I got into the passport control queue behind at least 1500 other people. By this stage I was extremely sore so we managed to get a supervisor to let us bump the queue otherwise I think that I would still be there!!
Once through the throng we got our cases at headed for the exit to look for our transfer to icmeler. We found the transfer guide and waited amongst all the other tired and over heated holiday makers. We eventually made onto our little bus, after almost being left behind, and left dalaman airport at 0600. I have to admit that you dont need thrilling rides when you have the turkish airport transfer. My other half was panicing most of the way to the hotel, and they say that girls are the weaker sex! lol Our driver had no idea where any of the hotels were for other passengers to be dropped off at. So it became a team effort to look for hotels in marmaris and icmeler. We eventually reached the bella mare in icmeler at 0815. Checked in had brekkie and went for a coma like sleep.

Met our friends later that day. My mate Kate was getting married to a turkish guy on 22nd. Her little daughter beth and kate had been there for 3 weeks already. Kates mum had arrived just 3 days before us.

The wedding day arrived, had a lie in , had brunch in the green garden retaurant (as we continued to do for the whole week, fab!) and went to get hair done. Unfortunately it was very hot and humid that day 48 degrees +. I had may hair cut coloured and straightened, but after the 20 minute hobble back to the hotel I had developed an afro! It was already 6pm and the wedding ceremont stated at 7.30! eek! So after panic straightening and shoving myself ino my posh frock, boyfriend in suit, we dashed out to get a taxi to friends appartment near the Cooks bar. Everyone we met thought that we had gone mad, including icmelerites, in our posh get up in the heat! Finally made it, wedding went well, everyone had a wee cry, all sweating like we were in a sauna!! Had reception at a wee place outside icmeler up in the hills, lovely cool quiet and secluded restaurant. No idea of the name! Only hiccup being that Jan had forgotten the cake! So she and a turkish friend had to go into icmeler again to get it lol!To finish of the evening kates mum and daughter joined us for a wee drink at the melissa bar, so the newly weds to have some quiet time!!

Thursday was a quiet day by the pool at our hotel with jan and beth.

Friday was my 30th birthday which was celebrated with a semi surprise birthday dinner at the melissa bar. Absolutely wonderful including a cake!!

Saturday attempted a wee bit of shopping, dinner in the hotel that evening. Was a buffet, boyfriend enjoyed the meatball main course.

Sunday was spent exploring a lttle, dinner in the olive tree restaurant behind atms. Absolutely wonderful food and service by King sololons team. The best food we had all week, would recommend to everyone! Turkish cuisine was fantastic and the chocolate souffle for dessert was to die for!

Monday was our last day. Finally managed to get boyfriend to go to the beach with me. Fantastic views, just wish we had more time as you can never relax on your last day! Wonderful meal again in the olive tree restaurant, treated like a king and queen!!

Finally we got our transfer back to dalaman with another crazy driver. Plane was booked for 28th at 0300. Queues were big but not as bad as arrival. Due to transfer being a bit late we arrived in the airport an ahour before flight. Checked in and waited or a wheelchair. The first one that came had flat tyre, going nowhere fast! 20 mins later another one arrived a lot beter, paddaed sides of chair with jackets to stop leg burning! However the attended took off with the chair when I still had both legs on the ground. After nearly breaking both ankles (no joke) we eventually made it to the gate. Unfortunately no time left for spending any leftover money, or a loo break! Made it back to uk at around 6 am.

So in summary ( if any of you are still awake) I found icmeler to be a pleasant place. Would have enjoyed it if we had another week to explore and relax as the wedding kinda took up most of our time. Green house restaurant and the olive tree are definately worth a visit!!
First moon bar and restaurant is a lovely place for a drink and a snack! The cooks bar was extremely disappointing! Went there with our friend the first night and got exteremly ripped off....avoid romeo!!
Shopping was disappointing, no haggling or bargains to be had.
The wee supermarket near the icr office is the best place to change money! Unfortunately didnt get a chance to visit the office and say Hi!
The old man at the bella mare was not what some other people seem to have found. I said hello to him on our first day and he was pleasnt chatty and heplful (stored my insulin in bar fridge).
Icmeler was lovely and love to visit another time, maybe when the temperature is more bearable, and allow time to explore surrounding area!

Thanks all for your kind remarks!
I'm also glad that at least 4 of you read my boring epic and survived to post a reply!!! lol

Would love to go back to icmeler with a few pre-requisites :
1. Would have to be a bit cooler. The air con in the hotel was fab but otherwise we were roasted. To enjoy it a temp in the 30 degree area would be nicer for me. My poor blue northern irish skin would take 6 months to be white nevermind actually getting a tan! lol
2. would like to be there for 2 weeks to have a chance to do some sight seeing and enjoy some turkish culture.
3. hopefully a change in attitude of turkish market traders would mean that I could enjoy spending some money and my other halfs hard earned cash too lol!!

But all in all yes I would love to go back!
