money out of cash machines

Postby daisysun » 21 Jul 2013 10:22

When we were in Icmeler last year we went to the cash machine at the bank over the road from Tansas on our last couple of days, and if my memory serves me correct we drew out sterling. Can you still do this?
last year we made the mistake of changing our money at home first, but for next year we are thinking of just bringing a small amount with us then changing the rest in Icmeler after drawing it out of the bank.

You can withdraw sterling euros or Lira from the cash machines. It is best to withdraw lira from the machines, so you are then not changing from sterling to lira.

Some banks charge you for this, as long as your banks not charging you every time you draw it out it will be fine.

thank you for your replies, do you get a good exchange rate if you do it this way (withdrawing lira) or would the rate be pretty much the same as at home?
Thanks, just working out the best options

In my experience the rate will be better than at home. Just make sure you tell your bank you will be using your card abroad and also check what they will charge you. The first time I withdrew from an ATM I discovered on my return home that they charged for every transaction so therefore best not to visit too often. I am also aware of people having difficulty getting money as machine said it could not read the pin, so my advice would be to ensure you have a back up card. Finally, I use a Halifax Clarity card and they do not charge for using this card and as long as you pay it off as quickly as possible the interest is negligible. Much cheaper than bank charges so that is my preferred option.

Thank you, i didn't realise that it was the rate at home that you get if you withdraw lira. Thanks

I have today received my credit card statement and between 19-28th June I got between 2.92 and 2.99 lira to the £ by withdrawing lira. I am sure that was higher than UK rate and compared favourably when exchanging the Pound in the resort.

I too have been using mu halifax clarity card for a few years now, its a waste of time withdawing english and changing it at a supermarket as you will just get the rate set in the resort, for example i was getting 2.75 lira to the pound from supermarket at the time, i draw out money each day in lira whilst i was there and my statement came through as getting 2.82 which is alot more than in the resort. I paid my statement off when i got home and was only charged about £2.00, no brainer really :D

I think it can be swings and roundabouts. I have a Nationwide debit card and there are no charges whatsoever for withdrawing sterling. I withdraw sterling and change into lira at the local shops. To withdraw lira there is a small charge but over the piece it evens out. The bottom line is it all depends which card you have/use.
