Buying Turkish Mobile Phone Advice please

Postby Roy » 31 May 2012 15:47

Who better to ask :?:
Considering buying a cheap turkish mobile phone (Turkcell) for the duration of being here (6 months) rather than using phone cards - any comment or advice appreciated. Apparently you can buy one at Turkcell at the end of the main road just up from Tansas for about 220 lira with sim card & 40 lira credit, - of course unless anyone knows better.
Thanks in advance.

complicated process but turkish phones arent the cheapest to buy
if you have an old english mobile then as Don said you can take it over and have it registered as a turkish phone in the shops in marmaris
this must be registered to a british passport with someone that is over 18 and you can only register one phone every 2 years
once the phone is registered as turkish it cant be changed back
also it takes about 10 days to activate it so you wont be able to use it straight away
also there will be cheaper phones than 220tl go into marmaris they will have a much better selection :)
hope this helps
i have done the process myself of registering the phone so if you need to know anything else please dont hesitate to ask :)

Katie you may have made an erroer in reporting that once you register it for a Turkish sim it can't be changed back

I think people will take from that, they can't use it with any other countries sim card i:e UK but of course you can

Thanks Katie & others, think I have got a good deal for much much less but will find out more tomorrow, turkish friend thinks he will get the phone cheaper for me. Was also told it costs a lot of money to register your old phone, is this correct Katie?

Go to whatever phone service provider you want to use in Marmaris with your passport, I personally use Avea as I pay 40 lira per month for unlimited texts (which I dont use) unlimited internet and 2000 minutes to any network in Turkey and Turkish landlines

Give them your passport and fill in the form and most are switched on now within the hour.

You can buy a cheap Turkish Nokia for something like 60 lira so enabling you to keep you UK sim in the other phone at all times unless switching sims all the time wont bother you

Thanks JT, the cheap Nokia is the one I plan to buy (pay as you go), wasn't keen to use my own mobile which is far superior - just incase it got complicated or problematic - cheers.
