2012 Tin Closing Ceremony

Postby viking pete » 04 Nov 2011 15:41

Hi all, Followed another members saving idea last year £1.00 per day + any £2.00 coins received in change.

Did very well I think - not sure exactly how much because I raided it on a couple of occasions to buy YTL as the rate went up. but still cashed in almost £250.00 in September

Started it again for 2012 on 1st October checked it today before locking the box £59.00 already.

Anyone else got any schemes ?

Pete.

Something similar. Have one of the money boxes that you have to open with a tin opener. Every £2 coin I get I drop it in for extra Effes money. Opening ceremony will be June next year lol

My daughter started university in September and we are giving her money each month which we knew would make it difficult to save for a holiday for 2012, this is the first year since 1997 that I haven't got a holiday booked for the following year and it feels awful. as we won't know if we can get away until closer to the time I thought I would try something.

For the last two months I have transferred more money to the saving account so it's not available on the debit card, this has left us short of money to the extent that it actually makes us think harder when we spend, eg. do we want that £20 takeaway for the family or shall we cook at home, the money is still available if we need it but it's more difficult to get at and stops any impulsive purchases. We now actually have £300 more than we thought we would have.

I still won't commit to a booking a month before we want to go just in case things go pair shape or my daughetrs needs more funding but if that happens I will definately have enough for a really good holiday in 2013.

The other thing I am thinking of signing upto is our bank offers a service where every time you use your debit card it rounds the amount up to the next £ and transfers the change to your saving account, eg I spend £9.49, my account is debited by £10 and 51p goes into my savings account, don't know how much this would save but even if it's only £50 thats a night out covered in Icmeler.

Any others with any ideas?

The worst thing in the world is looking how much is in there, done it so many times and thought I'll cash this in and catch up later...I think we can now call this the Greek way. Get a ton together and buy premium bonds there's always a chance you could win a prize, if not cash them in the time of ya jollys you aint lost jack .

Hi Dave.....both my daughters went to uni.One did a 4 year degree for teaching the other a 3 year English degree. Both worked part time all of the time. One did pizza hut and made more on tips than wages and transferred home for the hols. She has now been teaching 10 years and has two children and is way up the pay scale. The other worked at bella pasta, top shop, faith shoes and now has a post grad qualification and two kids and works as deputy manager for nursery. They both knew they would have to work, their uni hours were small except for teaching one where she had massive blocks of teaching. They laugh at the uni kids who work where I do and maybe work one weekend shift and thats it.They tell them how much they worked and what degrees they got. Also the fact they worked all through their degrees was maybe part of the reason they got the jobs they did and have the work ethic they do.Just a thought......
