Aegean air

Postby andy r » 08 Aug 2011 19:52

The most annoying thing for me in the demise of Aegean air is how they were allowed to drop there prices so dramatically and encourage people to purchase and still continue taking money right up till they went into administration.I purchased 4 tickets in may and while we where in Icmeler were told of there sale prices and subsequently purchased a further 2 .The following day they went bust. The claim form from ATOL doesnt look easy to complete either. :(

It was a very long and quite complicated form we had to fill in after the collapse of Kiss Flights, but we did eventually get our money back. We had to provide quite a lot of paperwork to go along with it too - receipts and so on.

I think the best thing to do if you can is always book flights/holidays with credit card as it is so much easier to claim. I have lost 3 flights, one for October and two next year and rang Virgin credit card, they were so helpful- am just waiting for the forms which she said will be simple and just sign and I get a refund from them and they claim from the CAA.
It is annoying Aegean taking money up until the last minute, bet the staff didn't know when they took bookings, nor do I think they knew they would be soon out of a job. Wonder how those responsible sleep at night?

I phoned my credit card company today, as I have still not received the claim forms. They told me they should be with me by Thursday. Expected time to be reimbursed was anything form 4-8 weeks.

It is a pain in the butt though, I agree. I have printed out all my invoices etc, just waiting to complete the forms now.

There is defintely a catch in all of this. Companies that went bust with in the last 2 years (no need to mention names) both have gone under 80 days before the season was over. That means they have collected everyone's balance payments. What a great way to cash in for the stomachless...!!

What is worse, Aegean were offering flight tickets for £60 to Dalaman for any date next year for any length of period. We did wonder first but after having been reassured , we even sent out thousands of SMS messages costing our company some bucks so to let people know about this deal. We were not earning a penny from comissions for flights what so ever since the end of 2010 but the fact that customers having cheap flights would give them more freedom to choose which place they want to stay in thus as a company we could take advantage of it for the time being. (Simple business sense with no dishonesty)

Devistating as it is, we were fooled by them even to the last minute. Onur Air selling their flights through a new company just after 24 hours is also suprising enough for me.
For all of that went on, I even gave an interview to an author of a national newspaper in Turkey which in his article gives a reference to my statement that questions these companies causing losses to all of us consiciously.

artickle can be found here: link:http://www.sabah.com.tr/Yazarlar/uluc/2011/08/07/tecelliden-abuzittine-mektuplar

Obviously companies do not go bust over night. If they are in financial trouble, authorities know of this a long time ago but somehow a deal gets made and you as a customer, us as an agent get ripped off at the end of the day.

Someone needs to put a stop to all of this dirty games in the industry.

Anyone going to fill the Aegean flights gap

Postby iluvicmeler » 09 Aug 2011 05:16

Like lots of people on here I have lost 2 trips for next year with this despicable company. Checked other companies and the cost is double.
As Aegean and H4 U were a massive carrier, via onur air to Turkey, surely this is going to leave a huge gap in the Market.
Do I rebook now at the unreal prices, or just wait last minute?.
Any suggestions grateful

E***J** have prices as far as next June and a return flight (14 days) is way cheaper than I paid this year.
What airport to you fly from?

Was that when they were selling the lights off dirt cheap a few weeks back though, just before the collapse?

Have you tried the other way, look for the cheapest package you can get to anywhere as long as it flies into Dalaman and then book accommodation in Icmeler, might work out cheaper for the flight that way.

The problem with that company that went bust is even before the con of offering the cheap flights days before it went, it was really only cheap for the first week or so then it started going up in price.

As Stewart said in another post I think we will now see realistic prices to Turkey by flight companies (the way they were before the cheap companies came in, who ALL went bust because they were not charging enough money to stay afloat).

http://www.flythomascook.com have flights for next year for £250 per person in high season and that is definitely not expensive as those prices are normally well over the £300 mark.

Get them booked quickly though as it will no doubt not be long before these exisiting flight agents start to put their prices up as people book

We still have our offer of £20 per person deposit as an incentive to book with us for next year so get your bookings in now for 2012

Hi JT,
September flights are coming in at a little under £200 each, which I think is good value, but includes 20kg luggage ( for the ladies)
Same as I paid for this year, the only thing is pay by credit card, the flights are NOT Atol protected. I try to budget under £1000 for a holiday for two. More Lira for Efes

Your so right John, if a flight seems too cheap, the company aint gonna make a profit, and will go bust the past few years have proved that, prices should now stabalise with all the regular carriers round about the same price, and hopefully will all continue to provide a service that is financially secure.Rog.

MAybe they have done their research and realised that to fly from Aberdeen was not cost effective and companies were bussing people to Glasgow for the flight.

If they charge £500+ then no one will take the offer so they don't have to lay it on.

JT: any time i have flown from aberdeen the plane has been pretty well full up. maybe if they charged around the same amount for flights from ALL UK airports all planes would be full. i really dont see how they can justify the cost for an extra half hour or so they have to stay in the air. unless the airports themselves are charging the tour companys more. if thats the case aberdeen airport should be ashamed of themselves. it wont stop me from going to Icmeler though, will just have to travel to Glasgow. :)

With so few flights from Aberdeen would imagine that people book early leaving the few more expensive seats left. While Glasgow has a much larger choice so people are not so quick to book such a long time in advance.

Trouble is if a company was in financial difficulty, and they made it public would you book with them, I would not and if nobody else did they would definitely go bust, where as they might have got themselves out of trouble given a little time.
