Walking to the Flag - Advice

31 Jul 2011 11:44

Read a load of threads on this and determined to get up to the flag this year. Can anyone advise the best route, where to find the start of the path etc? Also, is it best to climb early in the morning or wait till the evening?

I'm fairly fit but know full well that even walking to the market can be tough in the heat!

Any pointers as to the best route etc would be welcomed. Then all that remains is to persuade MrsG and our daughter that they will want to come along. I bet I'll be going alone somehow :)

Hello Darren, never go by yourself always take some one with you,you never know what could happen, always have plenty of fluids with you,if you do go make sure that you tell other people where you have gone,i would say early evening when the sun is going down,i have never been up there so i can not tell you the best route, take care and i hope that you do it.

As the above post says do not attempt this on your own, would be so easy to miss your footing and end up with broken leg etc and be laid there for a long time,
Actually my Advice would be..............Don't do it!

Hubby did it last June - there's a thread on the photo gallery section with pics from that climb which I think gives some idea as to the best place to find the path, etc. His best advice is to wear sensible footwear - trainers at the very least - and long trousers, as there are some very jaggy shrubs and so on. Some of those who did the climb with him were wearing shorts and got quite badly cut or scratched.

Hi Darren,
I set off on my own for the flag, but because it becomes very loose underfoot, decided not to go any further. It wasn't the going up that was the problem, it was the coming down (can't make out best route). Keep your eye on the forum, for when you are going as other people may go for it and you can arrange to go as a group.A few of us are there in September, so nearer the time will arrange a meet and climb. I set off from Tommy's as it's a gradual climb, past the cemetary and taking the barriered road on the left, near the top of the road is a path leading towards the flag. take a look at the last few pics on this link to see what your up against.

Whatever you do do'nt go alone. We walked to the flag last year there is no path as such. Coming down is worse than going up. We went early morning personaly i think this is the best time to go would'nt leave it until the evening as it can take longer than you think and darkness comes down quite quick.
