Icmeler/Marmaris at Christmas.

26 Sep 2006 14:50

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone would like to impart their knowledge on what goes on at Christmas time in Icmeler and Marmaris?

I appreciate they are both like ghost towns but have heard that there are always a few bars open to water the ex-pats.

Cheers

Hi Flora

I was there last December and this March and like you say it is like a ghost town but there were a few bars open and various different nights (chinese night, cash bingo and pool comps to keep the locals occupied).

In Icmeler Footballers Wives, Majestic, Miami and 3 Bells were open. Probably another couple aswell but I cant remember. Dont know if as many will be open again this year. I know Footballers Wives not opening during Winter until New Years Eve and Majestic are undecided if and when they opening.

In Marmaris the bazaar will be open and there will be a few places open on bar steet and around the harbour. These places generally stay open for the locals, expats and there's quite a lot of british and american naval folk.

The weather can be a bit hit or miss. It was very cold and wet in December and March was early 20s (reasonably warm by British standards although the locals were freezing!).

There's definitely not the same atmosphere or buzz that you get during the holiday season but then it really depends on what kind of holiday you looking for.

Hi Flora

I spent last New Year in Marmaris. Now being an Icmeler lover I really don't like Marmaris very much in the summer-time - too busy, too noisy etc... but I really enjoyed my week there and have decided I do like Marmaris after all - but in the winter!

Went to a New Year's Eve party in a hotel which was great - I must have been the only English person there, but the drinks were flowing, the food was fabulous (must have been 6 courses!) and the music was great. I'd love to do it again, it's a New Year's Eve I'll never forget!

As Lou says there are many places open for business in Marmaris, and half the bazaar was open. We ate or drank down on the Marina a few times and some days it was even warm enough to sit outside. Only needed a light jacket as the temperature was about the same as spring-time here. We had a couple days of rain - and boy did it rain, the roads in Icmeler were like rivers.

I have to say it was really strange seeing Icmeler all closed up and the sand piled up on the beach.

The only downside was that they seemed to be digging up all the roads and it was a bit of a nightmare driving around Marmaris - i reckon know the back routes quite well now!

Mazz or Glasgow Girl - did you get any pictures from when you went? I would love to see a couple as it is very hard to imagine what Icmeler is like in the winter!

There is a video on this website that was done very early seaon when they were getting Icmeler ready for the Summer season starting and that will give you a good idea of what it is like! Its strange watching it but exciting as it was nearly summer! I wish it was nearly summer now! :(

Hi

Thanks very much for your replies. At least now I know where to head for.

In reply to winter flights, as far as I am aware it is only ********** that fly to dalaman. I payed £240 return for mine but am unfortunate enough to be restricted to school holidays so you should get a much cheaper flight than that - usually around £120.
