Incident: Thomas Cook B763 over North Sea on Aug 15th 2010, unruly oven

This may be why there has been such a long delay.
By Simon Hradecky, created Sunday, Aug 15th 2010 13:01Z, last updated Sunday, Aug 15th 2010 13:05Z

A Thomas Cook Boeing 767-300, registration G-DAJC performing flight MT-975K from Manchester,EN (UK) to Dalaman (Turkey) with 320 passengers, was enroute at FL370 overhead the North Sea about 45nm west of Amsterdam (Netherlands) when smoke began to emanate from a galley prompting the crew to divert to London Gatwick,EN (UK). Galley power was disconnected and the smoke dissipated. The airplane landed safely in Gatwick about 30 minutes later.

The airline reported that packaging material within a galley oven had begun smoking. The airplane was released back to flight and returned to Manchester for a crew change landing in Manchester 6.5 hours after departure. The airplane will subsequently resume the journey to Dalaman.

It does not always follow that the aircraft that takes you home originated from your home airport.

Safe journey home.

Hi every one,

We were actually on this return flight to newcastle, on the 14.08.10 and yes you are right we were delayed 24hrs. At first we all checked in as normal went through passport control and were stung 6tl for one fruit shoot and 5tl for a small bottle of water. We then went to gate number 31 and sat there for quite a while the flight had landed and the bus was waiting to take us to the plane, we sat and sat and sat and people were repeatedly asking the turkish why we could not board the plane, their answer was there is a problem, so they must of got fed up with everyone asking one of them went through and got a t c rep to come and talk to us. His reply was i will have to hurry as i will be taken out by the police if i am here to long apparently it was the air con and we will be get to know in 20mins for info. Then along came a turkish airport worker shouted at co workers in their lanmguage and then shouted t c newcastle follow me yes we thought time to go. But now they started to take our boarding cards off us and not tearing them in half, we were confused and so were the turkish. We then had to go through passport control again to get cancelled stamped on our passports and we were told no flight to night you are all going in a hotel then to baggage reclaim then all ferried on buses, this is when you see how spiteful, people beome pushing children and old people out of the way. Anyway we had breakfast and lunch and spent the day around a nice and large pool, we were told that day that it was engine fault not air con and it would be cheaper to fly out another plane than keep us here and then when the new part had been fitted the plane would have to have a test flight anyway then we were told the buses to collect us at 6pm they came at 6.50pm and before then the rep returned and said the plane they were sending was to small and they were looking for 8 volunteers to be put on a flight to manchester later at 2am (we were flying at 10.10pm).
We checked in (again) 2 efes and 1coke later at the lush price of 35tl we went to gate 27 and held our breath, a lady came along and told us some of her party could not get on as they were the last 8 passengers and some went to birmingham and manchester aparently. And to end this story we flew home on a Lithuian Plane russian pilots but the crew had been specially flew in from gatwick with a Lithuian stewardess no row 13 on this plane mind you.
but row 12 had 6 seats on usually it has 4, but we arrived at newcastle 24hrs later safe and sound but very tired, we were all handed letters for insurance calims this is true i have not made it up i still cannot believe it myself. Lovely to see our daughter and her boyfriend to pick up oh yes and an earthquake as well but had a lush time.

Sounds like you had quite an experience, sue - at least you got back safe and sound, and had a good holiday before all the "adventure". Hope it hasn't put you off for the future!

Hi Sue,
we had a mishap with our holiday in May with the same firm, we had actually boarded the plane, eveything was going perfectly, had a lovely time in the exec lounge first(our holiday starts there!),boarding spot on time, then we get to deoarture time and we are thinking, oh we have just missed our time slot will be waiting for another, after about 20 mins or so everyone is getting tetchy, thinking we should be going by now, anyway what we found out afterwards was that when they had come to do the final checks on the plane before take off, it was discovered that a baggage handler had crashed into the side of the plane, not told anyone  and lefit it, so the skin on the plane had been damaged, we were then told that they in contact with the makers of the plane and sending them picutes of the damage to assess it,this was May bank holiday, so no chance of another plane, no one would make a decision as to whether the plane was safe or not, so we had to go to the Raddison for the night £11.50 for a vodka and beer! had a meal and breakfast the next day and then flew to our beloved Icmeler 1 day later than planned  so as we only had a 6 day holiday booked to come back in October :D
