Re: Exchange Rate

I seem to remeber reading somewhere on this forum that you can withdraw sterling from ATMs. Is this ccorrect? I don't want to take a shed load of cash with me, and on previous holidays have allways just got local currency from the ATMs.

Do I have this right, you can withdraw sterling, and then change it in supermarkets to get the best rate? (and aviod charges)

Daddy.

Hi daddylanc
You can get sterling from Atms, But if you are using any card but Nationwide you will be charged per transaction,
Take a little Lira, Sterling Travellers cheques (same rate as Stirling when Changed) use Supermarkets/Bars NOT Exchange offices. If you have a Nationwide Card you will get a slightly better rate than the bars.
Hope this helps
Steve

hi daddylanc,

its not just nationwide debit cards that are free of charge to draw cash from atms !! if you get a premium bank account with anyone like hsbc, first direct, halifax etc.. yes you pay monthly approx £10 but the benefits are plentiful ie free worldwide travel insurance, car breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance, free with drawl of cash from overseas atms and other stuff. The often work out much better and some are now offering £100 to switch accounts to them :D

im using my nationwide flexi account do i get lira out of atm or sterling to change into lira in the bars

Re: Exchange Rate

28 Jul 2010 07:01

hi, i would draw it as lira cos you don't get charged for drawing it out but i know on my first direct account the only charge is you get the international exchane rate minus 2.75% so if rate is 2.35 you lose 0.06 so you still get 2.29 to the pound which will be equal if not higher than most supermarkets

happy hols

Hi I use my Nationwide just for holidays, so if I only have a limited amount in the account, by withdrawing Lira you have to Know the Exchange rate, or work it out, :? :? so by the end of your holiday your funds could be low. Withdrawing Sterling is easier to work out.  i.e. £800 in £790 out   , But each to his own.

I withdraw it in lira, if the exchange rate is 2.35 for example in resort, I just cash 230 lira out, and I know its £100. but because you get the international exchange rate, you always get a higher rate, so its usually well under £100 I have cashed, and the remainder just goes towards the next holiday.

Very true John, but it gives an indication 3 or 4 points less in Icmeler. always look on the front page and not seen it at 2.40 this year..... got 2.40 during or 2 weeks last September... alas 2.19/2.20 this May.

Lets hope the relative good times are back for this September.
