Airport Security

29 Jul 2010 22:16

This is a delicate question so please no funny replies .... OH and myself will be flying out of manchester airport and im a little worried about going through the walk through barriers .. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 9th april this year and had a mastectomy with reconstruction straight away but only thing is i didnt have a implant straight away .. Because of where the cancer was postitioned i had to have a expander fitted which will not come out until end of november, i asked my consultant if ok to fly with expander and he replied yes but only thing is alarms bells will ring when i go through security as it has some bit of metal in it ... I know i can explain to security in the uk but how do i explain it to the turkish security when we fly home can anyone tell help me on this .....

Thanks Sandra :-)

Can you take a letter from your consultant?
Maybe you can ask your breast care nurse, im sure she'll have come across similar situations, if not maybe contact cancerbacup ? (you can google them, they have helplines and are a good source of information and support for cancer patients), your local macmillan team, or maggies centre - if you have access to one x
Hope you have a good holiday, good on you for getting out there !
Take care though, and remember that if you have had any treatment you maybe immunocompromised/ open to infections.

Thanks for the reply ... I have my last course of chemo on 30th august we fly out on 24th sept all scars are healed but have been advised by oncologist not to swim in the pool just incase i do pick up a bug ... Will have to paddle in the sea :-) I have been advised by insurance company that i will need a fit to fly and doctor has told me he will do that free of charge... I do have a breast care nurse who has helped us both a lot i never thought to ask her to write me a letter so thank you once again for quick reply and your help it is much appreciated ...

Thanks Sandra :-)

Sounds like you've thought of everything sandra !
Speak to your breast care nurse and thats that worry sorted.
You'll not be long finished chemo when you go away - be carefull x
Has your consultant mentioned having oral antibiotic cover ? or taking any away with you? Sorry, I dont mean to worry you more. Id advise taking a thermometer any way to monitor your temp if you do feel unwell.
What chemo have you had ? email me if you dont wanna post on here.

my brother was nearly killed in a car crash a few years ago and is held together by numerous bits of metal,he has a covering letter to get through as he lights them up like a christmas tree. The sercurity people are very understanding if you tell someone just before the scanners they wil sort you out.
go and enjoy your holiday relax and take in all that Icmeler has to offer
