British tourist drowns in Marmaris

26 Jul 2010 09:42

So sad RIP
In Marmaris, in the southwestern province of Muğla, an 81-year-old tourist Gingell Leonerda Llewellyn, who was staying at a hotel on Atatürk Street with his wife, drowned at the Municipality’s Public Beach Thursday. People noticed that Llewellyn was calling for help and rescued him. They called an ambulance but he died despite minutes of heart massage by paramedics. The beach is a blue flagged beach and must have a lifeguard, but there were no lifeguards present. An officer from the municipality said they were very sorry about the loss and added that immediate action would be taken and lifeguards would be hired for the beach. MARMARİS - Anatolia News Agency

Always sad when something happens like this when people are enjoying themselves on holiday.

Maybe he had a cramp or even a heart attack as there is no current or tide at all there.

Sad news anyway

Hi all. Registered especially just for this thread.

Can you help me please? This was my friend's father who died, and as you'd imagine there's a bit of mystery about it all.

Can someone who speaks or understands Turkish please visit this link...

http://www.lpghaber.com/videohaber/483129/

..and watch the video and tell me what is said by the two people who spoke, and what questions they were asked by the interviewer?

thanks in advance.

btw, his name was Leonard Llewellyn Gingell. In that order. Leonard was his first name, and Gingell his last.

Not having a go at you. Just fyi. I know it's been reported as the way you have it in the OP, but that is wrong.

Not a great translation but may be able to shed a little more light on the situation.
Deepest sympathy to the family.

thanks MK, already done that.

I just want to know what was said by the two witnesses. might shed some light on it all. If you can point this thread to someone with some Turkish language knowledge who can let me know what was said I'd be grateful.

Sorry for your loss. Here is the translation of what has been said in the interviews.

First Lady: (answers the reporters question of what she had seen or knows)
Have not seen the incident as it happened and just seen paramedics come for first aid. They had done all they could to save him.

Second Gentleman: heard he drowned, I ran over and seen that the people around who helped him initially have (obviously) given him a false heart massage...you know how our people are untrained for such aid... and then the doctors came and I told them about the possible false attention (aid) he may have received...doctors then took over the situation afterwards and done what they could...

Very sad news. Happened to young boy in icmeler in 2001 when i first visited icmeler. Jumped off peir ( if u could call it that ) & must have hut something at bottom, knocked himself out & died. Was shocking the way it was dealt with, they left him on the beach with just a towel over him for quite a bit, with me only being 11 we moved straight away. Needless to say it hasnt stopped me going back to my 2nd home. 9 years, twice a year .. & still going xxx
