HELP - how much money for a teenager?

Postby Fanny » 15 Jul 2010 19:00

Hope someone who's visited this year can help please?

we're taking our daughter's friend with us for 18 days in August and her mum wants to know how much spending money she'll need - to cover all food and drink as we are SC

14 year old so will be drinking soft drinks, eating out every evening and probably lunch too, will also be doing boat trips so what's the going rate for them this year?

am trying to come up with a daily allowance and some money left for getting bits and pieces from the markets

Sorry to be the first to respond and im a negative!! It has increased somewhat on last year price wise and normally we can spend a £100 a day - me and the wife. We spent in excess of 2k this year ate out 5 nights and not excessive amount of beer. We have been the last 3 years and this one shocked us somewhat. Hope somebody comes along with some plus points re money. It didnt spoil our hols but it made me think. Have a great holiday!!

Fanny i had same problem last year, being teenagers, you can get kids meals, because they are just happy with plate of chips, or a kebab. my daughter and friend were 17 last year and fancied fish fingers one night, so they dont need adult meals at all.

I think daughters friend took, £350 to £400 and she bought presents, and some t shirts etc. What her mum did was also pay some money into her basic bank account in case of emergencies,. She bought about £60 back with her.

They didnt do loads of trips though because that can eat into money, they went to water park and that was it .

are you Sc or hotel as that makes a difference.

if SC they may want brekki, so thats 7tl with a drink upto 5tl. plate of chips at lunch approx 5tl. kids meals around 8 tl, proper meal anything upto 30tl ish, so thats per day. Youll also find that you feel guilty taking the money off them to pay for the meal, or if they have to buy their own bottle of pop from the shop or nibbles. I fell for that a few times and wondered where my money had gone, so soon realised that i had my own family to sort out.

also as they had separate apartment, i couldnt afford to pay for 2 lots of expensive air conditioning, so they both had to pay their ownm it depends on what arrangements you've got in place.

And then she needs Visa money and her own travel insurance,

Good luck Bev

I have never taken my daughters friends with me because firstly I would be worried sick all holiday wondering where they where and if they were safe and having the responsibility of somebody elses child would worry me somewhat and that would spoil my holiday but that is me being selfish :? If I were to do it then I think I would roughly work out how much it could cost for meals etc and ask the parent to give you that money direct so you don't have the awkwardness of asking for them to pay towards it. Then her parents can decide on how much spending money for gifts and personal wants to give to her. I hope that helps and hope you have a nice holiday.

We're thinking about asking our daughters friend in 2012 when our daughter is 16. As mentioned above it would be the awkwardness of asking for the money when it came to meals and drinks etc, for that reason (and I said i'd never do it) I think we may go all inclusive. I'm a right soft git so if we went sc it would probably end up costing us a fortune.

I noticed, that prices had been increased compared to last summer. I have a teenage girl, so here are some prices for what we had (hopefully this helps you to plan the budget):
Average cost for lunch ( if you eat out) would be at least 10-20 liras per day per teenager. F.ex. chicken döner wraps or hamburgers are around 4-6 Liras, then chips 4-5 liras and coke or ice tea around 4 liras. Drinks can easily add up, as it's really hot and you really get thirsty. For evening meals I would reserve minimum 30 liras per day. Usually set menus are around 20 liras, even more depending on the restaurant and then you need few drinks as well. You can get a pizza or pasta for less but actually I noticed that it's more value to take the set menu as it only costs few liras more than one dish and this way you can get the salads, mezes and carlic bread etc for very cheap - but I would assume teenagers don't want them every day...
In addition to this, she is bound to have some drinks on the beach, occasional ice creams etc, so you need to make sure there's money also for that. What I would do is to ask the parents to give some amount directly to you towards the eating costs and then just the spending money to the girl herself.

For teenagers who don't always fancy turkish food or big set menus, would recommend Alin's Grill ( same street as Tansas). They have variety of dishes from really good pizza (we love their tuna fish pizza - maybe 9 liras?) to chicken nuggets, pastas, salads and if you want to eat at the apartment you can get a grilled chicken and big bottle of coke for around 10 liras to go.

Cafe Anne offers delicious waffles and they are around 8 liras (ice cream and strawberries included)! This is our favourite place for afternoon snack.. if we had missed the lunch and wanted something to hold us until dinner time....

We also took some boat trips, lazy day out was something like 20 liras per person ( lunch included, soft drinks 5 lira), moonlight cruise 10 lira per person ( dinner included, soft drinks 5 lira), trip to Dalyan mudbath and turtle beach around 30 liras, turkish bath pricing varies a lot as so does the services you get, but at least 30 liras per person, beach massage 15 liras, manicure or pedicure around 10 liras.

If anything else interests you, just le me know.

Thanks for all of the advice so far folks - please keep the suggestions coming though, as the more suggestions I get, the better

We've taken daughter's friends away twice before, the first mum gave me £s for food as we were SC and another envelope with a daily allowance. The other mum set her daughter a £20 a day budget - that was hard to deal with because when we did a boat trip, she was only left £10 for food and drink all day and I did supplement it tbh.

We're only asking her mum to pay flights as the accom/transfer costs are the same regardless of whether she comes, so I won't feel bad about not supplementing her [not got much cash to spare myself haha]

Was thinking of suggesting perhaps a budget of £30 a day which at 18 days is £540. That seems a lot of money but like you've all said, prices have gone up and soft drinks are dear. We tend to do a lot of boat trips and she's keen on doing that, so it's all to be taken into account I suppose?

oh decisions, decisions eh?! :P :?

Hi,

We just back and my husband & I were B&B at Bonjour for 7 nights . We ate at lunch times and had drinks, also drinks on the beach. Every evening we ate out and two nights were BBQ nights that cost 30TLR each, with out drinks. Certain retaurants are doing set meals for 15-20 TLR. We also had a boat trip 20 TLR each and had drinks extra on boat. With miscelanous spends over 7 days and not going without anything we spent £600, we did take £700 so had some extra spends at airport on return.

Hope this is of some help.

:D

Thanks folks - I'm going to suggest £600 all in as more than likely they'll have kebabs for lunch and pizza for tea, or go for the set menus
