Peanut Allergy

19 Aug 2009 09:22

We're off to Icmeler on 31/08 for six days SC at the Celik Appartments. One worry is that my eldest son (22) has an allergy to nuts (peanuts mainly) which potentially is life threatening. He carries an Epi-pen which is an auto injector of adrenalin should any symptoms arise.

However if the symptoms are severe he should be stabilised by a doctor or hospital. This usually just means more insulin.

Is there a hospital in Icmeler or other suitable medical facility that I can pre warn of the potential problem to assure prompt attention. What sort of hours do they operate? Is it 24/7?

I've researched Nut Allergy and Turkey (oh alright I've googled it :) ) and it seems that peanuts and peanut oil do not normally feature in Turkish quisine apart from cakes and the like.

Although the likelyhood of a problem is low I would obviously like to be prepared.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

There is an A&E Clinic in Icmeler which is very friendly and they speak excellent English! Not sure if this is open 24/7! Although there is a huge hospital in Marmaris which is also very good and open 24 hrs! When you get to icmeler why not go and speak to the local Pharmacist, as they are more like doctors in turkey! They are very well trained! I am sure they will be happy to offer you some advice!

Hope this helps!

The restaurants will be more than happy to accommodate you. If you just ask about the dishes and explain the condition to you they will be able to advise you on what dishes to avoid. I have had a lot of things made especially for me that are not even on the menu so I don't think you will have any problems.

Might be worth trying to print information off internet in Turkish to keep in wallet etc to show that your son is allergic-just incase you go in restaurants where english isnt as good?

Good idea from Doz, get it translated into Turkish, I used to have a serious allergy to mushrooms amongst other things, and I had to explain in every place and several still brought me food covered in mushrooms, also you need to watch how they cook food as there may be nuts in some food preperation that they then prepare your sons food on the same surface etc

I have a friend with a pea nut allergy so know how serious it can be.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Its all very helpful and re-assuring.

Colette, I wonder if I could ask you if you have any colleagues or contacts that could do the translation for me? I could PM you with suggested content and perhaps you could then email me back the turkish version for me to type up on a card. I'd be most grateful and there may even be an Efes in it!
