Old Village

07 Aug 2008 14:44

Just a thought!!
In all the threads describing,"Old Village"can anyone define what is the old village, becouse any description or location of a property that isnt imediatly in the town near all the bigger hotels is designated old village this can confuse a lot of people becouse it covers such a large area which a number of years ago was just plantations and smallholdings
To me and probably a lot of others with an intimate knowlege of Icmeler the"old village" is as it says a village which to me is located well to the right of the town facing the sea, consisting of the, what is left, older properties becouse all the newer bars etc progresing further up the valley can in no way be described as such I dont know what the answer is? its just something to "think about" over an Effes or three!!

I define it as when you get past tansas.

Apparently on hotel descriptions they define the old village as the way it was many years ago. You had the centre, and you had the old village, with not much in between the 2, now it has become developed the 2 kind of merge into one now. And the old village now geographilcly is probably bigger than the newer part of icmeler. That is why it is best to check the distance to the town centre on the description of your choosen propery, the ones nearer the new part will normally say between 500-650 metres, anything else you will probably be getting towards the back of icmeler which was the original old village.

I could be wrong but that is my understanding of the information I have been given in the past.

The old village has to be were the old Mosque is and the Bakers and Barbers are and were all the little narrow winding streets are, only wide enough for a donkey pulling a cart.
My old village is in the area of Captain Sinbads restaurent were goats, horses, and hens are all kept near the little cottages and vegatables are still grown in the owners gardens.
This area is to the left of the town with your back to the sea.

Thanks Gene
Your thoughts are the same as mine, wonderful little world of its own Turkish life, there are probably a lot of visiters who arnt aware of this part of town I love it!
But Steve has a good point I think we are being dictated to by the tour operators by neccesity, As Steve says what most people refair to as the old village is realy the center of Icmeler and the hotels the "resort center"
Either way it can confuse some who arnt sure of the history of Icmeler, if you look at photos 30/40yrs old it explains itself the layout of the bay and valley how it has built up over the years even the beach is man made with quarry sand

We stay up in the old village and we always walk around the back of the village through the narrow streets, past the Barbers and mosque to Captain Sinbads where we had a lot of our meals last year.
The old village has a total different ambience compared to the main part of Icmeler though both have their own appeal in very different ways.

Sounds great, peli - looking forward to doing a bit more exploring when we're then in October. The maps on this forum have helped a lot - now I'll know where all these places are which I plan to visit next time.

All part of the Icmeler experience, if you ask me, peli! Can't wait - I'm so jealous of those who are there at the moment, and I'm counting down the days till we get back!
