Concrete eyesore or not ????

31 Jul 2008 15:27

Over the last couple of years we have seen the development of the new moorings for the dolmus and other boats to the right of the bay This I believe was necassary to improve the beach layout etc But in regard to the shop properties over there I cant see any retail buisnesses moving over there I know a good lot of people have a wander over there but I think to be viable a shop needs a lot of passing trade, plus the local people say the rents are sky high
Here is my theory!, the conrete jetty is long enough to take a cruise ship and the water is deep enough so here would be the passing trade, a 1000 or so boat people here for 12 or 24 hrs,and is certainly good for the town trade
Just one of my thoughs whilst watching it develop or have I got a too fertile imagination I have asked a few buisness people I know but they dont know

Hi Peli,

My sentiments exactly as soon as I saw them start building it a few years ago I thought about it. I think thats exactly what'll happen although the cruise lines would take a few years to schedule their itinarys to suit. That would be the death knell for a lot of holiday makers because the prices would go up when a cruise ship is in town. ( aka Rhodes town, one price list for non cruise ship another for when its in port) Can only wait and see.
But then again its called progress and the local economy would get a huge boost, god knows they need it after bombings, earthquakes, credit crunch etc I just hope the local councillors can strike a balance.
We're off to "home" tomorrow so hopefully the ships will stay in Rhodes for the time being!!

Yeh we could be right as I mentioned Ive talked to a few people in differant buisnesses and its not just that they dont know but they were a bit cagey in saying so
Not good for us but the town needs income and at the moment the money isnt going in the tills

I don't think that the marina would be deep enough for cruise liners and even if it was deep enough you have also got to look at the damage to the underwater ecology as ships come and go.

Hi Geovil
Ive been out there with a couple of local boat owners and they reckon depth is no problem and I would imagine they would tie up on the out side of the jetty In regard to ecoligy its sad to say bottom line money talks
Anyhow thanks for you view I hope yours is right but Im putting 2&2 together what with the shops etc and making 5 Its just speculation on my part but it looks a bit of overkill just for gulets etc
I sincerly hope Im wrong

Hi all,
The duel prices are a standed think in Kusadasi when the big ocean cruise ships come in there so that's already happening in Turkey. Just wonder if thay could bring in the taxiboats to the new marina and creat passing trade that way, and leave the bay roped off for swimmers. I also think thay added the light house to make it look a bit more appealing.

dont think ecology will come into it much, seems to me it's more about revenue and the more the better so far as council is concerned

really hope that it doesn't become a port of call for cruise ships though

Yeh Peter
Agree light house and rest of buildings are ok blending in etc but what about the the ugly glass monstrosity at the near end, strange one that ? its like something out of the center of Manchester I can only wonder what they were thinking with that one ?
Strange how your mind wanders when your sat with a glass of effes in your hand or is it just me!!

Bet it's going to be nice and warm in there in the hight of the summer, just wonder when thay are going to start to open them up. I was there in June and had a walk along and thay seem to be complete but with no sigh of anyone moving in as yet, or is it as afore mentioned thay are too pricey for the locals and are hoping for outside traders to take them up, money people from marmaris perhaps??
Eather way it don't bode well for the piece and tranquility we all know and love.

The price of them was a big issue with someone I know it was last year he was saying his takeings were bad in his particular line of work and was thinking of opening a resturant over there but the rent was ridiculous and obviuosly nothing has come of it and this year it wasnt talked about, but we are out in Sept Ill ask about it then
There again it raises more questions, the more you try and wiegh up what is going on the more it swings toward, cruiseboat, becouse to me no way can any buisness survive over there so why build them ?
Hope Im wrong

It made a big differance in Kusadasi when we were there in 1999, before we dicovered Icmeler, it used to effect everything, the exchange rate use to change as did the prices in the bars and cafes along the marina. But thay were only there once a week for an overnight stay.
I Think the last thing Icmeler needs now is more bars and resturants, some are already struggaling to survive, and if like you say the rents are so high then prices for food and drink is going to be past on to the customer double wammy me thinks.

Yeh Peter full agreement with you It looks like a matter wait an see Ill do some asking about in Sept when we are there, hopefully anyone going out there in the next week or so can ask about it and give us some input on return
As I say though cant see the reason for it all Has anyone else following this thread got any thoughts on this or is it just you an me scratching our heads!

Speculation aside though, i can't make my mind up if it is an improvment or not, it has certainly tidied that end of the resort up.I suppose it will look a lot less stark if and when it is up and running properly. I wonder if thay were ever going to carry on going round to that large hotel that was being built just round the coast between Icmeler And Turunc, i here say that that project has run out of money????.

Yes Peter it is an improvement apart from the great unknown(jetty) Re the big white eliphant round the corner Ive heard two stories although there are probably more, first is of a family divided ??, second which I was assured is right is that the goverment release grants every so often and that the developers wait for. How they are going to fill the 1000 odd bedrooms I dont know??
If you dont mind Ive PM you in regard to my info

I hope & pray that cruise ships don't start to berth in Icmeler.
I agree that the shops etc have been built in a location that can't survive because of the lack of passing trade , this is exactly what I said to my wife after getting off a boat trip in July this year. I have visited Kusadasi for a day whilst on a cruise ship & I can now understand why people who have been to Kusadasi say they will never go to Turkey again , but they have not been to Heaven on Earth.

Regarding the "white elephant" round the corner work ceased 15 years ago after two brothers ran out of money, this was according to some boat owners from the " co-operative" two years ago.

Thanks Denis but I see some final fix going in about 5yrs ago as I say stories!! will we ever know the truth No disrespect to Turkish people they can be how would you say??,evasive!!! in letting us know things

Have not heard anything this year about the tunnel that was supposed to be built thru the mountain from Icmeler to Turunc we heard about that a number of years ago but nothing since,as that been shelved now as well.

Hi Geovil
I heard that one a while ago I think its just holiday talk if it was a main autoroute maybe but afterall it will only be linking two villages/towns and will be a dead end at Turunc and the main route to Turunc is quite direct from Marmaris I feel sure the benifits dont warrent the expenditure, countless million, for what! But!!! you never know!!!,
