Why would the mobile be cut off ??

Why not top your mobile up with say £20 worth of credit ONLY for emergency calls back home and buy a phone card out in Icmeler to make longer calls back home, that way people can contact you without it costing you a fortune ??

We bought the cards and they're dirt cheap - 5 lira for 50 mins of calls to UK land lines, or 10 lira for 100mins worth of calls.

We used hubbies vodafone last year (he'd had passport put on his phone to used it abroad) and were told it was 75p to connect and free from his inclusive minutes there after. This was fine in Greece but it didn't apply in Turkey (this they forgot to tell us  ) and we got stung with a phone bill over £200

I've heard they get cut off aswell if it's an english phone and you just put a turkish sim in. Something to do with the greedy phone companys over there.

I think you need to take it to a Turkcell shop with all the papers for the phone so it can be registered. There is still 1 in Icmeler as far as i'm aware opposite Tansas.

didnt used to be a problem
ive taken all makes to turkey in past years for friends
but last year the government put a stop to it
if you try to use the phone without it being unlocked they close it in 1-2weeks-you get message sent to your phone
i took a nokia phone for my bf at christmas
went to turkcell shop with my passport uk receipt and they photocopied all the paperwork-i bought a new sim-and was told to wait maybe 1 month but it was never unlocked
nokia phones are supposed to more of a prob than other makes

When I lived in Turkey for 6 months, I used my uk registered phone with a Turkcell sim card. All was ok for about 10 to 12 weeks then the phone locked. It took a week to get unlocked at a cost of around £25.

I wouldn't personally take over aphone for someone as later on their phone would lock and the cost might be more than they could afford on their wages.
