tanning query???

21 Jun 2007 10:59

excuse me for being thick, but this is a question i've wondered about for years but been too embarassed to ask.....do you still get a tan if you were to lie under the shade of a sun brolly all day?

I never use them, but see people who do and they seem to be a couple of shades browner than i can ever achieve, must be my scottish peely wallyness :) .feel free to make me feel stupid with your answers.

21 Jun 2007 13:56

hi lynn, no it's not greying that's the problem, it is sun-kissed blond......but let's just say there's not a lot there for the sun to kiss  .just thought, this is beginning to look like a lonely hearts ad :)

can you tan under a sun brolly??

Hi Mr Magoo

Sorry you wont get a tan under a brolly.

21 Jun 2007 14:39

Thanks lynn. ah well, that's that decided then....better not lie under a brolly or I'll come home ultra peely wally.

what confuses me is that the beach is full of brollys and the folk lying under them have great tans.it's just no fair :)

Hi Mr Magoo :)
My mum has just returned from icmeler. She always lays under an umbrella on the beach and she always comes back with a super tan. I think a lot of it could be to do with the breeze.

21 Jun 2007 15:53

I know how you feel I'm a peely wally too

Just back from hols and really peeling now

I go red, blotchy then peel dont know how people get these lovely tans. :?

I always use Niva for Dry Skin (white bottle, blue screw top) as an after sun and haven't peeled the last couple of years! It's a little greasy when you first put it on - but gives a lovely glow to your tan and absorbs right into the skin after a short while. It's not that scented so really great for the fellas!

And yes you can tan if sunbathing in the shade - my dad does and goes a great colour.
It's no different to cloud-bathing which I did for half the week I spent in Icmeler last month :? the UV rays are in the air and I came home as brown as I would have been if the sun had shone the whole week! Just remember to keep applying the sun lotion though - you can still burn even if you're not out in full sunlight!!!

Hi Mazz

I'll give your nivea a try. I use their moisturiser already on face (thats not peeling)

I lay under brolly for 2 weeks and did'nt get a tan :? came back whiter than I went as I had been using that holiday glow stuff before I went. :P

tanning query???

21 Jun 2007 20:41

Yep. You can tan/burn under a 'brolly. The UV rays are reflected by the sand/stones. The danger is that you don't feel it as you do when you're in direct sunlight! K eep slapping on the cream.

21 Jun 2007 21:38

Look for the woven cane type brollies, they let dappled sunlight through and you can get a nice tan, I put No8 suncream in the morning and it lasts all day and i always get a good tan.

22 Jun 2007 08:04

I was reading in my local newspaper last night an article about coming home white is a job well done. With all the fears about skin cancer and damage to your skin, is it really worth it - the tan I mean? I am very fair skinned and dont tan anyway so I will be under an umberalla.

22 Jun 2007 08:21

thanks everyone for your replies.

I had a suspicion you must be able to tan even when under a brolly, I suppose it must be to do with the breeze and reflections.thanks again.

Lynn, come on with you being a scot you should know that peely wally isn't a wally who peels, it's a description of someone whose a wee bit pale eg. "you're lookin awfy peely wally the day, are you feeling ok?"

you must be very posh

Hi Magoo

Of course I know what peely wally means

I was just saying that I was peeling after my holidays 8)

"Very Posh" aye right of course I am

22 Jun 2007 10:03

You cannot be tanned by a breeze  . You can only get tanned by UV rays.
If you are under an umbrella you are in the shade, so its like being in a house you don't get tanned there do you. Remember you will not be in direct shade all the time you are under the umbrella and you may get some reflected UV rays.

Also when you are walking around you are absorbing UV rays.

22 Jun 2007 12:31

Its funny about not getting a tan if sat indoors, because when I have been sat in the 3 Bells all dinner time(3hours) and drank my lunch
(5 pints of efes)
I always come out with a red face, so surely something is getting to me?

No wisecracks saying its the beer getting to me

On the subject of 'tanning', does anyone have any good tips on how to get a nice tan? I'm quite fair and normally just go slightly pink then go white again  I hate it! When I come back, all I get is 'Thought you'd been in the sun the last fortnight!?'. A few people have told me to go for a few sunbeds before I go & that'll help, but not really keen on sunbeds.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, from the milk-bottle white one!!
