Taking Foods

This will be our first time self catering as in the past we've always used hotels. The wife and girls were wanting to take some stuff with them, ie bacon and sausage, also some of the kids favourite foods. I know that a couple of years ago we weren't allowed to take any meats from the Uk into Turkey, has this rule been relaxed now ?

Sometimes people with family's take food with them so that they can spend there money on trips and things

Hi Zog,

We have been going self catering to Icmeler for years now and always take some bacon and other little things, we just pack it in a tea towel and put it in the suitcase as we are about to leave the house and then as soon as we arrive at the apartment it goes straight into the fridge/freezer and its fine. We have never (touch wood) been stopped or questioned about it in either airport.

Its a good idea as you dont always feel like going out for breakfasts and you can suit yourself.

heres one for you, ive done this many times whilst traveling to the middle east, wrap the bacon/sausage etc etc in a pair of your wifes briefs!!!!!! as they are mostly muslims, if they do happen to open your case they wont touch the meat, 1 because its pork and 2 because what they are wrapped in.

I dont think you're being cheeky but take a look around in Icmeler at how many restaurants do full English breakfasts and how many people are buying them and I think you'll find I'm not in the minority. Also the grandkids (4 and 3) are fussy eaters so we make sure we have what they will eat.

I took rather a lot of bacon out with me last year, like scousebabe, I wrapped it in a towel, it wasn't a problem, but have to say I was slightly nervous

Years ago we went to Spain and packed some frozen sausages. On the scanner, at the airport in Spain, they looked like bombs. We were wainting on the coach for Mike, he was ages, when he arrived he said he'd been stopped by security and had to open the suitcase. When they knew what the items were we were allowed to bring them in.
When we do go SC we always take food with us. We took a load of bacon to Tenerife one time. The ex pats out there were buying it off us, couldnt get enough of it.
Nowadays though, English breakfasts are readily available, so no need to take so much. Unless you're like us and like to have a leisurly breakfast sitting on your balcony. It lasts for most of the day.

well admin!!! that all depended on how long i was there for, i was once there for 3 months, and you cant buy bacon in Qatar, so the size i will leave it to your imagination!!!

we took bacon last year and i was sooo sick of bacon , we gave some away! the appts we were in had a horrible little poky balcony and the kitchen was so dark there was no pleasure eating in at all.
Although I do understand a family with children sometimes do like to eat in as children can be fussy eaters!

One of the things I enjoy about our holiday is eating out and trying different foods. Much as I love a good fry up I try to avoid that type of food on holiday. Some people are fussy eaters but the Tansas store seems to cater for all tastes and generally has imported branded foods or local foods.

go on your on yourholidays try some of the local foods you may be surprised how good they are
