Why do they pile the sand up

15 Jan 2007 12:40

Shaz took some piccies of it

CLICKHERE

But I am still curious, do they do this to avoid it blowing away in winter storms? Or so it can be cleaned? Or so it can have a sand party? To stop stray cats doing there business on it?

It's one of them things that I have the bit between my teeth over and need to know the answer

You know, i have been wondering too...dont want to come up with ideas either cause none of the ones i can think of sound any rational...I will find out next time i meet the mayor, promise:)

My ideas weren't rational either  but I wonder this each year why it is done

Cheers Rami :D it really puzzles me as we don't pile our sand up over here

ive found the answer

hay colette ive just found the reason why they have the sand piles for you. :D

the first reason is that if there is a really bad storm in the winter then it stops the water from coming in so far and also stop the water from coming in on a high tide and hitting the bars and resturants in that area.

the second reason is that some of the sand is brought by the bars or resturants and stops the brought sand from being washed away by any high tide in the winter so then no more sand is having to be brought for the next season.

i hope that is all right.

Hey Mel thanks for that :D I will pass it on to all the people who have asked me as well :D

Shaz you have a very clever daughter :D

May be a stupid question..... but why dont they use "real" sand rather than the shingle that hurts?

17 Jan 2007 14:26

i know this one as well yorkshire rose

when the bars and resturants buy in the sand they buy it in to make there part of the beach look alot more appealing and hopefully this incourages alot more holiday makes to spend the day on there beach and spend alot more money . the nicer looking part of the beach the more holidays makers you hopefully get. which then makes alot more bussiness.

I think maybe there is a cost element involved in importing the finer sand, wherever you go all over the world, the sand is always different and different textures.......this is maybe just Turkish sand

the first reason is that if there is a really bad storm in the winter then it stops the water from coming in so far

Just been looking into this, Icmeler isn't a TIDAL beach, IE the water doesn't flow in and out like my local beach near my house? But I guess if there was a really bad storm it is better to be prepared for a worst case scenario.

Do big tractors dig it up? Im guessing the waiters don't run out with spades and do it?

Good that the local businesses buy the sand etc in front of there places, it's a real sense of community spirit there :D

Does the council help with costs as well?
