That Time Again

14 Jan 2007 01:04

I have got my computor back from the doctors after a five week absence from the site through its illness.

We are well into the new year now and once again the excitement and anticipation of forthcoming holidays are again filling my thoughts.
This year I intend hireing that jeep I have promised myselfe these last couple of years.
Ann says she doesnt want to do the jeep safari because of the water that gets thrown about.
Andre on the other hand loves the water fights and the hose pipe attacks.
So by driving myselfe,we will I hope, to avoid all that water confrontation.

Along with Terry and Sandra and Joanne,my daughter and Andres mum
we intend to drive down to Datca for a short visit then continue down the penninsular to Knidos, this being a place I have never visited.

Also with the jeep we hope to go to Akyaka and maybe try the mountain road to Turunc.
I make plans every year of what to do on our holidays but never seem to get round and do the adventures I plan.
My trouble is, just to get to Icmeler and lay by the pool, is to me
"Utter contentment"

A Few Trips To Consider For Next Year.(Dug out of the Archives)

Boat Trip Round The Bay Of Gokova.

Gokova Bay covers the magnifcent scenery of the gulf of Gokova whom Jaques Cousteue rates the pristine condition of the sea and beaches as the finest in Europe.
Visit English Harbour were boats off the English Fleet used to hide during the war.
Take photographs of the little mermaid a small sculptor in such a vast sea.
The scenery round this area is stunning so please take your cameras

Cleopatras Island A gift to Cleopatra from Mark Anthony.
White sands, old ruins,
Some people say three and a half hours is to long to spend here,
How long would you like to spend in Heaven.

I would reccomend taking plenty of water with you although I do understand that a cafe is on the Island.

Day Trip To Akyaka.

One of The trips we did last year was to a little town on the Gokova Bay called Akyaka.
It was only an hour from Icmeler and on the way we stopped at a couple of rock tombs from days gone by.

Arriving in Akyaka was as I imagined it, a beautifull little village with this magnificent backdrop of mountains.
Having an harbour area and the Azmac river running into the bay over which river is a rustic wooden bridge, this has got to be a photographers paradise.
Fish restaurents lined the pretty promenade and one step and you were on to the beach area, were sunbeds and brollies were in abundence.
2 beds and 1 brolly 4ytl.
The beach shelved gently into the sea and you could walk out 150mtrs before having to swim, this was great for Andre and he loved jumping and diving into the waves.
We left Akyaka at 3.30 arriving Icmeler 4.30,oh I wish we had that beach and sea at Icmeler.
Then they havent got any "3 Bells" "Lion Bar" "Majestic Boys" etc, or do they actualy desire them? I think not, this is a resort for those who like peace and tranquilityand that is what reigns in this Turkish resort.

Jeep Safari To Oranihiye.

How many of you when going on the jeep safari have had the chance to call at Oranhiye and had the chance of "Walking On Water"

Oranhiye is a little village with sunbeds, a couple of restaurents and a camel you can ride, but is better known for a 150 mtr stretch of sandbank that sweeps out into the bay.

Legend goes that when pirates attacked this village, one particular maiden filled the front of her dress with sand and sprinkled it into the sea trying to make a path for her escape.
Unfortunately her sand ran out, sooner than face the raping and pillaging pirates she threw hereselfe off the sandbar and was drowned.

Another story is that if any woman walks to the end of the sandbank and returns she will go home a virgin.
Theres a thought girls.

Datca

one of the nicest places I have had the fortune to visit.

Leaving Icmeler and heading towards the Bozburun Peninsular it took one and an half hours through winding roads and picturesque villages, driving over a mountain range where to to one side was the Bay of Marmaris and to the other the Bay of Bodrum.
Onward we travelled till we came accross DATCA.
A true Turkish town whos market meandered through the quaint streets and not one bit of hassle.
Tree lined promenades with bars and restaurents suiting all tastes.

Boasting two beaches,an harbour and first class country park as well as my favourite 10 white ducks swimming in the sea,
DATCA is most certainly a place I intend to make a repeat visit.

Marmaris & Turunc

For those who dont wish to spend a full day out on the boats but would like to do something different and spend a little time on the briny, why not do the twenty minute trip by taxi boat to either Marmaris or Turunc.
Both in opposite directions to each other,

Marmaris,
with its narrow beach, bustling promenade, streets and squares,
its castle and picturesque harbour area.
Here also you will find the big supermarkets,Macdonalds and you can also catch the Dolmus from Marmaris that will take you to other regions of Mugla.

Turunc,
A world apart from Marmaris, boasting a nice harbour area and small picnic park,a narrow promenade running the full length of the bay lined with cafes bars and hotels.
Sunbeds are free along here as long as you use the facilities of the cafe
whose beds you lay on.
Lovely views out to sea were the blue of the sea blends into the sky.
There are shops bars and cafes just back off the sea front but everything is low key.
It makes a nice change to come to Turunc just to relax and be quiet for a short time before going back to Icmeler.

Hi Gene....

I was Just wondering , did you book the Akyaka trip on your own or did you book through a company ?
I have never been before and the way you describe the place i would love to see it .
Like you , we have great ideas of things to do and places to visit . When we get there though the weather is so hot we inevitably end up at the pool or on the beach .
This year is going to be so different

This year is going to be so different (Quote)

We say this every year but like you say its so hot to do anything and chilling by the pool or on the beach seems to be the easiest thing to do.

A few of us hired a little bus to get us to Akyaka last year.
We will have to have a word with Sharon to see if she can organise transport if there is enough interest in going to Akyaka.

hi Gene,
nice to see you back in action again.Datcha is also one of my personal favourites and the market day is so layed back for Turkey, its a shock to the system.but to my mind a jeep safari with no water fights and ambushes is just boring. As we speak i have sent away for an even bigger super soaker. (this thing is so powerful i am on standby for the fire brigade), i also hope to meet some forum members on the road, and cool them down.i,ll be the fat rambo with all the children.

Hi David.
I agree with you about the water fights and it adds to the excitement of the day out and also has that cooling effect on those hot summer days.

But the wife fell out with water when on one jeep safari we went on,the driver drove under one of those large standpipes standing outside a garage and water was gushing from the pipe.
He parked the jeep directly under the pipe for 10 seconds, the wife taking the brunt of this deluge.
He pulled the jeep foreword so we could all catch our breath then promptly reversed back under this mini Niagra.

The wifes perm was ruined, everyone was fallimg about with laughter, but my little love bud couldnt see the the point in all this merriment, hence no more jeeps with any hint of water.

Ann also doesnt go in the sea when we go on the boat trips, she really has a fear of water,I thinks thats the reason she lets me wash the pots at our house.

I think one we will definitely be doing for the women is a trip once a week to Datca market.

The men could have a few hours to explore Datca's watering holes and to admire the scenery from the harbour front hostelries while the women shopped their heads off

18 Jan 2007 14:32

Please dont encourage the girls John on these shopping trips .
They dont need any more shoes and handbags, but the harbour area at Datca is truly lovely and you do get some fantastic views from the restaurents that are elevated up on the top road.
