22 Jan 2014 12:14

Looking for recommendations for holiday insurance for my daughters boyfriend who has a serious heart condition. We know its going to be quite expensive however at the moment we are struggling as i normal just use a search engine but the standard companies will not insure. Any suggestions please?

Debs14. My husband has complex health problems and we have found Insure & Go willing to insure him, even after a recent hospital admission. They did increase the premium but that was to be expected. I do not use the search engines, other than to get an idea of costs, as I feel it is important to ensure you have the correct cover. I have also had a very competitive quote from Just Travel 0800 294 2969 and previously used Direct Travel Insurance. It may be worthwhile approaching an insurance broker if all else fails I am sure others will be able to advise and hope you manage to get cover and have a great holiday.

Both my wife and I have numerous health problems and I have found Southdown insurance to be very well priced.

Thanks for all the replies we will have a look at the ones mentioned, he has had 12 procedures on his heart, 2 of them major so very important to get the right cover for him . Got one quote yesterday for £180 for 10 days seemed a bit steep so will keep looking.

Please, please check the small print of any insurance company, I have a few health problems (heart & lung) and found that many companies will insure me but minus health, some will insure me for cancellation only and some for all other problems other than my diagnosed conditions. I end up paying a fortune for myself and husband, he is over 75, but in good health (I'm in my fifties) but at least I am covered if my heart/lungs decide to play up while I'm away. Usually costs us £300ish for 2 weeks but it would cost more than we could afford if anything happened while away. Cheap isn't always the way to go when your health isn't the best - please take care and check any cover thoroughly.

I agree with Mags. There's no point having a low quote when you're not covered . We also pay a small fortune for our insurance and make sure that we declare absolutely everything, even things we may not think are relevant and let them decide if it's relevant or not. I have a record on my laptop of all our medical conditions including dates and medications so its easier to reel them off, it still takes ages though to sort out.

I know that this sounds morbid but whilst chatting to an undertaker following a death in the family he mentioned that he'd just come back from an airport with a body and that the family would have to pay a fortune, as it was not covered by their holiday insurance. Apparently every county that you travel through with a body has to be paid a sum of money. Even if you travel from a local airport your flight could be diverted on your return. He said that small print should be checked so that it includes return of the body to your home, not just repatriation.

Sorry to bring up the subject on a holiday forum but it's better to know these things in advance and it's the first thing I now check before taking out an insurance.

The British heart foundation lists recommended insurance sites but it's still worth getting quotes from as many of them as possible. My previous insurer jumped from £87 annual to £212 after my heart attack Luckily I found similar cover from insure and go for £112

Thanks for all the advice he has been looking around and has found lots of different quotes, now thinking we might just go to an insurance broker just to get advice and make sure he is fully covered. He is only 19 and really looking forward to his first turkish holiday so dont want anything to spoil that for him,hes quite relaxed about it think i'm more concerned than him about getting the correct cover.
