This happened to a family who were renting a house over the road from our apartment in early August. They woke up next morning and all valuables had gone, they didn't hear anything (a good thing!). Such a shame, insurance can replace things but they were shook up a little and obviously this had ruined their holiday.

So lets try and put things into context here before the majority of forum members start to panic.
These poor unfortunate people have been burgled, not robbed. Which is a totally different kettle of fish. When you consider the number of people who pass through Icmeler on a yearly basis to hear about one or two is inevitable. Irrespective of where you are in the wold there is a chance of this happening when you consider that a majority of tourists think nothing of sleeping a heavy drinking session off with their patio doors wide open and valuables on display and not locked away in their safe.

Turkey and especially the Marmaris area is suffering from an amount of bad press recently, the chances are that its always happened, its just being reported now due to people jumping on the bandwagon.
I have travelled to Icmeler for more than 12 years and never have I felt unsafe or spoken to someone who has been a genuine victim of crime whilst on holiday.

I agree - news of these things spreads very fast now thanks to social media, but things like this can happen both at home and abroad. If you let it put off you going on holiday or going about your normal life, then you're only letting the scumbags win...

Icmeler isn't perfect - nowhere is - and obviously there is crime everywhere. I think there's absolutely no need to panic or worry anyone, but it's a timely warning to people to be alert and remain on guard wherever they are. Some people do tend to throw caution to the wind because they're on holiday, but you need to keep your personal safety and security to the front of your mind at all times, no matter whether it's on your own doorstep or the other side of the world.

Burgled is theft whilst robbery is theft with violence so they were lucky it wasn't robbery.

We tend to leave windows open but only where there are those wrought iron bars. We stayed last year where there were a few private apartments and a fire broke out in one of the top floor apartments. We got out quickly but on seeing the large number of 'spectators' went back in to make sure that our apartment was locked and no windows left open. Found out later that a couple in one of the other apartments had a gold ring stolen. Icmeler is no different to anywhere else, there will always be thieves and if you give them an opportunity to steal, they will.

This isn't a new thing. When we were in Icmeler in 2007 my family and I were staying at the Mandolin Apartments and we were robbed. We had 4 rooms booked, and my dad kept the safe key in their room. A few nights into our holiday someone sprayed my mum and dad's rooms with something which meant that they wouldn't wake up whilst the person commiting the crime went into the room, took the safe key, and a few other belongings from their room.
To save money hiring a safe we'd stored everyone's money and passports in the one safe, and it was emptied.

These things happen everyday in London Manchester Leeds Glasgow ETC, but arnt put on forums because they are a daily occurances, if you take usual care when on holiday, keep windows shut, doors locked, and use the safe, i keep the key on me at all times, then you should be ok, also when out if you are a couple ,keep any bags in between you, ...rog.

We had it happen to us in Istanbul. Someone came into our room while we were asleep and took my friend's bag off her bed. We are convinced it was a member of staff as a key was used, and after a visit from the police, the bag was "found" with everything in it, supposedly in a rubbish skip at the back of the hotel. I've now got an alarm you hook over the doorknob, and if the door is opened, it shrieks loud enough to wake the dead.

That's a very good idea Canli and as Kentcabbie says ensure you take the usual precautions to stay safe.

That's a good idea, Canli - do you mind if I ask where you got the alarm?

Amazon and eBay have them, along with a few other security gadgets, like door stop alarms that fit under the doors. Well worth a few quid.

Excellent idea. Would they work for the patio doors? I suppose you would need alarms for them as well.

We just returned on Monday , work in progress on the review as work and stuff in the way at the moment. But please be aware if you are staying on a ground floor or lower ground floor your patio doors LOCK .

As one couple did get robbed in resort by this, and were asleep at the time , so maybe 2 alarms .

You will always get baduns where ever you go in the world , You would not go to bed in the UK without locking a door .....
