Shave Con Merchant ........

14 Jul 2013 10:07

Hi All,

Just back from our 2 weeks in 'Paradise' and went out to change a t-shirt (wrong size) myself without Mrs G (Big mistake!) ... This was our 2nd visit so I believed I was clued up to the usual banter when passing Shops, Restaurants, Hairdressers etc ... But I wasn't! .....

We were staying at the Mersoy Bella Vista and I walked up past the Scotia Pub and Tandoori Sizzler as usual, then turned left up towards the Shop I was going to, on the way past the 1st Hairdresser on the left (just past ICR Office) I was greeted with the usual 'Hi Mate, where you from?' with the customary handshake .. I was courteous as usual and said hello etc, he then asked if I wanted a shave or trim of my Beard which I declined, he then offered me a business card which was inside the Shop and invited me in ... (2nd Big mistake!) ... It was nice to be in the cool, but before I knew it he had slapped some hot green wax on my nose, offered me a seat and despite my initial protest his young boy gave me the works! (Eyebrow trim, Beard trim, Wax removed from my Nose, Neck shaved, Face and Neck washed, Forehead massaged, Aftershave, Sinus smelling salts and MORE!) ...

The boy then shouted for the 'Boss' once he finished and ushered me to the back of the shop, where he got his calculator out and expected 45YTL! .. I said 'No!' and reminded him that I didn't even want anything originally, plus over the 2 weeks I had been asked that many times about a shave etc that I roughly knew the prices, but thinking to myself that the boy had done a good job, I gave him 20YTL and the boy 10YTL ... Not a thanks from the 'Boss' who turned his back, but if that's how he gets business then I hope when we go back I see an empty Shop with the words 'Satilik' (For Sale) on the Window!

I did enjoy the treatment and will probably get it done again (elsewhere though) when we go back ... But it should have been my choice, rather than being conned ...... Just be careful if going out without the Mrs!

I have certainly learnt a lesson, but if business owners continually hound people in this way too much it will put many off from returning because of it

Thanks for reading!

Paul

Was this the Black and White hairdressers next to Friends? Heard a few stories like this one, usually putting the wax on the nose to get you inside to take it off. Happened to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for posting the warning, had heard the place was being closely watched but obviously not done anything about it yet, probably why they are putting the wax on the nose inside and not outside so it would look like you wanted to be inside etc.

Well Geordie this con has been going on for years and as Eatock said has been discussed on this forum recently. Believe me it doesn't matter whether the Mrs is with you or not they are adept at getting people in to their salon. Glad you posted as it is a timely warning to holidaymakers to steer clear.

Thanks to you both for your replies ... It was 1st on the left as you turn left walking past the Scotia Pub and Tandoori Sizzler .... (Only our 2nd visit and we haven't been up there much)

Was unaware that this was an 'on-going' con, so I'm glad that hopefully a few people heading over can read and be a bit wiser!

Shame that these type of people are giving Icmeler a bad name with their antics!

Same sort of thing happened to me last year at this hairdressers and had one eyebrow re-shaped before I knew it and had the devil of a fight to get the other matched but I insisted I wasn't paying and complained to the Boss of these tactics who did apologise and said he would have a 'word'. This should be stopped.

This has been a real bone of contention on various forums this season, and Black and White do seem to be among the worst offenders! Hopefully the message will get through and they will stop this kind of thing, as it could well put people off coming to the resort...

Sorry to say that I was conned there as well. The guy tried to show me some photos on his phone, of course it was too bright to see outside. Once indoors the green stuff was painted on my nose and the next thing I've had a shave and wax. Con aside, the quality of their work is best described as poor but there was no way I was going back to get it fixed. When I mentioned it back at the hotel several other Icmelerites told me similar stories about that particular hairdresser and from these stories I was lucky not to be a woman !!
Not all hairdressers are the same though. Last year I went to one just yards down the road from the Wayside. Price was quoted before we started and the quality and service were excellent.

... I didn't realize that this was such a common con! ... Hope my 30YTL wasn't too generous for what I had done! :(

At least I'm now wiser for either September (hopefully) or next year if not

Same thing happened to me at this place in June. Went inside to get a card and some one put the wax in my ears from behind. Had to sit in chair for it to be removed but not before they put it on my nose. They then proceeded to thread and trim my eyebrows and then removed the wax. The shaving foam was immediately applied to my face at which point I got up and said enough was enough , I was then asked for 20tl, I gave him 10 & walked out promising I would spread the word back at hotel. This happened on 1st day of hols so let quite a few people know over the next 2 weeks.
Would definitely not return to Black & White!

This review brings back memories this also happened to me a couple of years ago we knew about his antics then we were also passing his shop when without any warning he came up to me asked how i was and covered my nose with this hot wax and I mean it was hot..... It scalded me I can tell you he was very very lucky he wasnt wearing the pavement for a hat for a couple of days later I had a blister on my nose I must of looked like Charlie Cairoli lol. But I've got to agree antics like these don't help the icmeler we all love . Roll on sept when we are back there again can't wait Cheers for now. Kenny

I had the same thing happen last year, i was walking past the place when the guy standing outside asked if i would like a shave, i said no, he then said i'le give you a card to take away, he went inside the shop under the pretence of getting the cad, he then came out and caught me unaware by putting foam all over my face, saying in you come, i went in and started shouting at the man who i thought was in charge, he started yelling at the the guy to was the foam of me and apologized to me, the guy washed it of then had the cheek to try and give me a card.
I past the place in June this year the guy outside trying to pass his card's out heard my Scottish accent tried to get me inside the shop to show me picture's of Edinburgh on his phone, i said that not going to happen mate, so it's still going on then.

Really watch out for this guy in black and white, my husband was conned into a shave and masage with the wax on the nose after being asked to look at photos on his phone, I was so angry and he was conned out of 40TL for a rotten shave, apparently he has been reported and will hopefully will be shut down

Yep!! 'I got done' too. Exact same method, same hairdressers. I explained that I wasnt carrying any money (I'd only popped out for a stroll, and to take some photos). Before you could say 'rip off', I was in the chair and the shave i didnt ask for had started!! I repeatedly told him I had no money with me all through the process. When he'd finished, he asked for 30ytl. I asked him for his 'boss', the one who'd got me inside for a business card. I was told that he'd gone out for the afternoon. So I simply walked out, and I never went back. The boy wasnt happy, but tough, he shouldnt have attempted to hoodwink me!

It happened to me and my friend last year, he stopped us as we walked past then proceeded to thread one of her eyebrows ,we had a problem getting away from him, as he wanted money. I put it on the forum last year warning people, he should be closed down.

I once nearly got duped as I wanted my acrylic nails infilled. I know not many places do it in Icmeler yet because of the equipment needed and probably the cost of materials etc but I had been to one salon down by L'Etoile who were honest and said no, sorry they did not do the acrylic. I passed Black & White who said yes, they can do.
I went inside and sat down to be greeted with a girl who looked like she'd been woken up literally that second after a night out in Marmaris. This did not make me feel comfortable at all.
She looked at my nails and started to pick at the acrylic on my little finger, I was like 'excuse me, what are you doing'. she says yes, I pick it all off first. Er hem, I don't think so. Not only could I do that myself if I wanted to but it does not remove the glue properly and kills your cuticles. Anyway, needless to say, I was outta there in a matter of seconds. This is nothing of course compared to actually being duped for money, makes you feel stupid when they have totally taken advantage.
Then again, I have had my hair done in Icmeler before, at the hairdressers down the side of Ezra jewellers, opposite Timothys (what used to be) it took 3 hours and cost me 60 TL. It did look nice but now every time I pass, the guy in there tries again and again. Last time I went in June, he recognised me from before. Asked me to go back and have tea and all the usual, I said I would try but I was there to spend time with my parents and also had other friends I needed to see. he added me on facebook and when I did not go, (for which I apologised) he decided to abuse me online. He is now blocked of course. :x

I can't believe folks have said they've been conned into having a shave because for a start don't go in the shop then they sit in a chair then someone foams them up what do they think they are going to do,not once has it happened but numerous occasions ,I know they are smooth talkers to get you in their eating places and bars but please.............

..... Not that hard believe me! ... I was simply off-guard and went in to get his card (don't know why though, must have been the heat! lol) .... Before I knew it hot wax was on my nose and I was invited to sit down in a chair to have it removed ... then suddenly from behind his boy started on my eyebrows despite my protest and the rest happened ... sounds daft I know, but like many others it is that easy .........

When the lad came out of the shop and he got got with the hot wax believe me he didn't get me into the shop he couldn't get into the shop quick enough.

The guy from the Black and White (who I can only describe as an absolute snake) got me in exactly the same fashion as everybody else last year. I'm the most dubious person there is and all I can say is, until it's actually happened to you don't judge other people for it as it took quite literally seconds to be put in a very uncompromising situation. It's unfortunate but when your completely covered in shaving foam with a razor at your throat your not really going to argue to much.

I genuinely pity anybody this has happened to or happens to and I hope they/others are shut down quickly and reprimanded for their underhanded tactics as this activity completely ruined my day (and our daily budget) when it happened.
