New Airport to support Marmaris/Icmeler area

I received the following link from a friend in Icmeler. Its a petition for a new airport to be situated near Datca which will serve Marmaris/Icmeler area. Thought some of my Icmeler friends would be interested in filling it in.

I would be quite surprised if that went ahead. I don't think there is enough flat land available for an airport. It seems to me that everything down there is up hill. The road back isn't too good either.

There are flat areas on the Datca peninsula, this paragraph taken from Wikipedia

Datça has nine villages scattered along the peninsula. These are; Cumalı, Emecik, Hızırşah, Karaköy, Kızlan, Mesudiye, Sındı, Yakaköy, Yazıköy. Historically, apart from small coastal patches, Datça Peninsula has two fertile areas along its length. The whole of the eastern half is bare, mountainous and scarcely inhabited. The western part is also mountainous, rising in places over 1,000 meters, but has towards its western end on the south side a considerable extent of well-watered land reaching to the coast

When you think about it, the approach to Dalaman is mountainous too, so don't see a problem having an airport in the Datca area.

I don't see what advantage this would be as the roads from Datca to Icmeler are not the best.
The road improvements from Dalaman to Icmeler have been on going for 12 or more years now and have made the journeys to and from much quicker and safer.

a proposed air port site at datca was on the cards 10 years or more ago its pie in a very high sky ,as most replys say

Would still be quicker than the Dalaman journey. Been travelling that road for 13 years and, although they do seem to be 'improving' it I can't say the journey time has reduced that much.

Have often wondered why no airport had been thought about nearer to Marmaris and Icmeler as Dalaman is quite a long way. It makes for quite a long journey as well as the flight and the journey we have here to our airports. When you think of how many regional airports we have here in Britain, those in Turkey are very few in comparison compared to the size of the Country and ours. I hope it goes ahead, I think it's a great idea.

What I did was to have the Turkish version on screen, then I have tab on my toolbar called 'Page' and in the drop down menu there's an option to 'Translate with Bing'. Not sure if everyone will have that option, but sure whatever system you are using there should be an option to translate. Hope this helps

The Datca road airport or close by may well get the go ahead as that road has been developed a lot over the past 18 months and we were expcting some sort of announcement considering the Turkish president has built his own 5 star Islamic hotel very very close to it and all them roads have been widened and re layed expecting heavy traffic.

The presidents son also built a large complex just on the outskirts of Marmaris so you never know what is going to happen.

Its not a matter of what they've spent on that particular road, its not the only road being worked on in Turkey, the Datca road has also been worked on and I've found it to be fine - in fact, better than the Dalaman-Marmaris road. Also the money they have spent on the Dalaman-Marmaris road has been ongoing for years, so the money has obviously been spent on a phased basis.

As for 1hr 20min transfer, thats all very well if you've budgeted for a private transfer, but for the ordinary joe this transfer can (and has) taken 3 hours and more.

I say bring on the new airport at Datca, and if JTs post above is anything to go on, its looking very likely and not so pie in the sky after all.

I have drove to Dalaman airport and done it in 55 minutes, I have been in a certain persons car who sometimes thinks he is a wing commander and done it in 40minutes but it will be a lot less hassle for us and of course tourists to get to their accommodations far quicker after a 4 hour flight to Turkey

As for using tour company transfers Dotty, you dont have too. Let the tour operator organise the flights and hotels but tell them you have your own transfer organised. Thats what we have done in the past,, you can have checked in got rid of the bags and be on your second Effes by the time the offical tour bus arrives!!

Yes we already do that Keith, learned the hard way many years ago though. I was meaning for those tourists who don't know any better or those who have a transfer included in their package then its the 3 hour slog. Also a lot of people don't want the expense of paying for a transfer if one is already included in their package price.

Yeh this is quite a bit extra when there are only two of you. £100 added to journey as well as package price.

It doesn't make you any better but it means that you can afford to get a private transfer....some people don't have that luxury....and believe me £100 is a lot for a transfer if there are only 2 people sharing.

I'm sure, like myself, many forum members have to budget/save for a private transfer, and in these hard times folk are struggling just to get a holiday so may see a private transfer as an expense they could do without.

There is no doubt that an airport nearer to Marmaris/Icmeler would help to overcome this problem.

Why sign this petition: Yes, it will make your transfer journey to Icmeler and Marmaris shorter and cheaper but in the big picture, it will bring an added value to both resorts and bring in substantial revenue for Marmaris and Icmeler to develop in the long run.

There are plenty of sufficient flat areas in this region for a new airport and most politicians have already made a promise towards such project in the past so it will happen one day or another but your involvement may help things proceed a little faster so please take the time to sign this petition.

Don't think it makes a great deal of difference on the transfer time from Dalaman to Marmaris whether youre in a bus or a car. The main problem for the tour operator buses is that they have a number of drop offs in Marmaris etc which takes up most of the transfer time. The folk transferring to Icmeler are always the last drop offs.
I always book a private transfer and I do know it can add as much as 20% of the holiday cost extra but it is the choice of the individual and whether they can justify the extra expense.
